Certificate in Islamic Studies

The Certificate in Islamic Studies provides students with comparative and interdisciplinary training needed to prepare them for careers in government, non-government organizations, and business where knowledge of Islam and the Muslim world is beneficial, and for graduate-level work in both disciplinary and area studies units. The certificate is open only to degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Requirements for freshman entering in Fall 2016 or later:

Complete a minimum of 24 credit hours from Islamic Studies coursework as follows:

  • One Islamic Studies ‘core course’: REL-A 270 Intro to Islam or HIST-C 205 Intro to Islamic Civilization or NELC-N 265 Intro to Islamic Civilization (3 cr.)
  • At least three upper level (300/400 level) Islamic Studies courses (9 cr.)
  • One 400-level Islamic Studies course (3 cr.)
  • At least three courses that cover three separate geographical regions of the Muslim world as identified in the course list (9 cr.)

About Islamic Studies Courses:

  • Our Course List is organized by geographical regions and thematic courses. Thematic courses may count, for the purpose of the certificate, toward 1 of the 3 required regions.
  • Up to 6 credit hours of third-year language coursework from a language common to the Muslim world (see below) may count toward the certificate.

Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bamana, Bengali, Dari, French, Indonesian, Kazakh, Kurdish, Kyrgyz, Ottoman, Pashto, Persian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu, Uyghur, Uzbek, Wolof

* Other languages may be approved by exception. Please consult the academic advisor.
