General Information about FLAS Fellowships
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are funded by the United States Department of Education in order to support graduate and undergraduate students who study less commonly taught languages, as well as the cultural practices and institutions of the peoples who speak these languages. In particular, FLAS fellowships encourage and support the study of those languages and cultures that are considered to be of critical interest to the United States. They are intended to promote the training of students who plan to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, nongovernmental organizations, or in other careers where knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is essential for success.

FLAS Fellowships from the Islamic Studies Program
The Islamic Studies Program seeks to award FLAS fellowships to students who study one of nine languages that we support (below) and who have interests in the study of Islam and Muslim peoples and practices, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, Central Asia and Russia, and South Asia.

The Islamic Studies Program is authorized to award FLAS fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students who study the following nine less commonly taught languages:

  • Arabic
  • Bamana
  • Persian
  • Russian
  • Swahili
  • Turkish
  • Urdu
  • Uyghur
  • Uzbek
In some instances, and depending upon a student's particular research area, we can request permission from the Department of Education to award a FLAS fellowship for a language other than one listed above. Please send an email inquiry to the Islamic Studies Program (islmprog@indiana.edu) about this.
