April 2000

Two new grants offer funding for IU instructors interesting in pursuing the scholarship of teaching and learning.

SOTL Research Grants

Deadline for Proposals: May 22, 2000

Do you have an idea for a scholarly research project to improve teaching and learning? Have you already begun such a project? The Acting Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties and the Vice President for Research and Dean of the University Graduate School are pleased to announce the availability of research grants in the amount of $1500 per investigator. These awards are designed to encourage new or ongoing studies into issues of teaching and learning as part of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) initiative at Indiana University.

Bloomington campus faculty members are invited to submit proposals for scholarship of teaching and learning research grants for the academic year 2000—2001. Though individual projects are eligible, “cluster projects” involving collaboration of two or more investigators representing different disciplines are encouraged. Thus, a selected project involving a team of two investigators would receive a $3000 grant. Projects involving tenure-ineligible faculty and associate instructors are also eligible for awards.

Inherent in the grant award is the obligation to share knowledge and expertise gained in conducting the research with others at IUB. Willingness of researchers to serve as resources for others in the SOTL community is a criterion for selection. Recipients will be expected to participate in one or more SOTL related activities such as:

  • Lead interest groups in topics related to the research project.
  • Facilitate seminars to mentor or support new researchers.
  • Conduct workshops or give presentations as part of the campus SOTL event series.

Grant recipients will be expected to devote two weeks or more of full-time effort to their projects within one year of the date of notification of the grant award.

Guidelines for Proposals

In no more than four pages, please describe the:

  • Research question to be investigated and how it advances the scholarship of teaching and learning; the methodology to be used and reasons for choosing this approach; milestones and timelines for the research project.
  • Preliminary results (if any), anticipated results and pitfalls.
  • Impact of your study on undergraduate teaching and learning.
  • Potential contributions to the SOTL initiative at IUB—i.e., plan to share knowledge and expertise with others in the SOTL community.
  • Plan for disseminating the results of the research. Commitment of additional funds or resources required to carry out the proposal (if applicable).

In addition to this document please attach:

  • An abbreviated curriculum vitae (not to exceed four pages).
  • Any other documentation you think may be helpful.

SOTL Presentation Awards

Deadline for Proposals: May 22, 2000

The Office of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties is pleased to announce the availability of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) presentation awards for

established scholars of teaching and learning whose work may not be widely known beyond their academic units or disciplines.

Bloomington campus faculty are invited to submit proposals for awards in the amount of $1000. Awards will be given for presentation of scholarly work, either in progress or completed, with potential to advance undergraduate teaching and learning. Inherent in the award is the obligation to present the work at an interdisciplinary meeting of campus colleagues. The session will be part of the series of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning events to be conducted on the Bloomington campus in Academic Year 2000-2001. Awards may be given either to individual faculty or to groups collaborating in the production of a scholarly work.

Presentations should be based on your own scholarship of teaching or learning. Standards for scholarship proposed by the Carnegie Foundation include clear goals, adequate preparation, and appropriate methods. Scholarship is research-based, though the basis may be broadly defined to include classroom research, research of the existing literature, or other unconventional forms. For descriptions of last year’s presentations, see: http://www.indiana.edu/~deanfac/sotl/eventsdescr.html

Your proposal will be evaluated for the potential impact of both the results of your study and your potential as a presenter at a session for colleagues. Proposals will be selected on the basis of their relevance to the study of undergraduate teaching and learning and the benefits of including the presentation in the Scholarship of Teaching series.

Guidelines for Proposals

In four pages or fewer, please describe the:

  • Working title of your session, as well as its approximate length, format, and any required materials.
  • Nature of your study, including a statement of your research question(s), a description and explanation of your method, a discussion of your results and conclusions and/or your expected results and conclusions.
  • Impact of the study on undergraduate teaching and learning.
  • Potential contribution of such a session to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning series.

In addition to this document, please attach:

  • An abbreviated curriculum vitae (not to exceed four pages).
  • Any other documentation that you think may be helpful.

Recipients will be expected to:

  • Conduct a faculty session in a designated event in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning series. The session, of 20 to 60 minutes duration, may be structured in any format that includes discussion: i.e., presentation followed by discussion, pr-designed group activities, etc.
  • Write a brief description of the session to be used in pre-event program publicity. The description should appeal to a broad spectrum of faculty interests and perspectives.
  • Prepare originals of handouts, worksheets, and other materials associated with the session. If the scholarly work that is the topic of the session is published, provide a copy and permission to disseminate to session participants. If the scholarly work is in progress and unpublished, provide a written description of the project and status report for dissemination to session participants. Submit materials to a designated party for reproduction at least one week prior to the session.
  • Submit the completed research for publication if the work is currently in progress.
  • Demonstrate support for the ongoing series of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning events.
