February 1999Grants, Etc.Instructional Media Development GrantsMedia Production is pleased to announce a competition for 19992000 Instructional Media Development Grants. IMD Grants underwrite production of classroom video or audio programs designed to support undergraduate and graduate instruction on the Bloomington campus. Media Production encourages projects that fill a particular instructional need or that solve a pedagogical problem for a faculty member, a department, or a school. Though IMD Grants provide no salary, Media Production contributes all labor and materialsexcept in the case of extraordinary travel or materials costs. A minimum of four projects will be supported during the 19992000 academic year. The deadline for proposals is March 1, 1999. Faculty members who receive grants will collaborate with ISS in developing, scripting, and producing video and audio programs. The award-winning staff provides expert advice and assistance in the production of high-quality video and film as well as analog and digital audio recordings. While Media Production cannot independently produce interactive videodisc applications or multimedia projects, the staff can produce footage to be used in such projects, and will collaborate with other ISS units and with University Information Technology Services in producing digital presentations. Any travel expenses must be borne by the faculty member or his or her department. Copyright clearance for third-party media must be obtained by the participating faculty member prior to submitting a proposal application. All media produced in the course of IMD Grant projects, as well as all productions containing this media, are, unless other arrangements are made through Media Production, the property of Indiana University. Distribution and percentages of royalties for marketed programs should be determined during the application process. Grants will be awarded by May 3, 1999, on the recommendation of faculty referees and the Office of the Dean of the Faculties. All projects start after July 1, 1999, and have a tentative completion date of August 31, 2000. IMD grant proposal forms and guidelines are available through Media Production, Franklin Hall M114, 855-1983. Interested faculty should arrange an initial consultation session with Ralph Zuzolo, proposal coordinator for Media Production, 855-1983, rzuzolo@indiana.edu. See related stories Earth Science Video and Abrahams Children, and Media Production's IMD Grant page for examples of what faculty members have done with Instructional Media Development Grants. Active Learning Grants for Summer 1999Six to twelve instructional development grants of $1500 each are available for the summer of 1999. Offered in conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties, each grant will be awarded for the revision of an undergraduate course or the creation of a new course to more actively engage students in learning. Bloomington campus tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible for these awards. The deadline for proposals is March 1, 1999. Examples of active learning methods include, but are not limited to, collaborative learning, problem-based learning, case methods, course projects, simulations, and technology uses. Grants are intended to encourage greater student engagement with critical thinking and higher levels of learninganalysis, synthesis, and evaluation of informationin contrast to absorption. Grant award winners will be expected to devote two weeks or more of full-time effort to their projects in the summer of 1999 for a course to be taught fall semester, 1999, or spring semester, 2000; participate in one or two group planning/working sessions in the summer of 1999; and deliver a written report or oral presentationfor interested faculty and staffoutlining the implementation and evaluation of the project within a calendar year of the fellowship period.
