September 1998Digital Images Task ForceThe final report of the Digital Images Task Force, convened last fall at the request of ISS Director Ray Smith, is near completion. The Task Force--cochaired by David Goodrum, Director of Instructional Consulting & Technology, and Beverly Teach, Director of Media Resources--has been exploring the creation of a centralized collection of easily accessible digital images for use in teaching and learning by faculty and students at IUB. Task Force members are: Gerry Bernbom, UITS; Kris Brancolini, Library; Kenneth Crews, Copyright Management Center, IUPUI; Eileen Fry, Fine Arts; Rachael Stoeltje, Library and ISS; Suzanne Thorin, Library; Brian Voss, UITS; Gary Wittlich, Office of the VP for Information Technology. Issues addressed by this group include architecture and infrastructure, content access to digital image collections, identification of images for inclusion, and funding and staffing needs. Copyright was also a major concern of the group, and discussions focused on the need for images to be: 1) in the public domain (stock photo archives), 2) from personal image (photo) collections, 3) from specific collections where copyright is held by Indiana University, or 4) licensed from a commercial source. Surveys of departments and schools will identify the range of images currently available and the types of images most desired. The Task Force will recommend the creation of a pilot project using Dido, the Department of Art History's Image Bank, developed and maintained by the Fine Arts Slide Library. It will also recommend that representatives from ISS, TLTL, UITS, and the Library's Digital Library Program research and establish standards for image creation and information retrieval. As many digital collections available at IU as possible must be integrated into a common design architecture, so that users can search across image banks. |
