The organization met for the first time in November of 1999 and has grown along side the development of the International Studies program.

In the past, the organization has hosted speakers and events such as:

   - Applying to Graduate School in International Affairs
   - The U.S. Role in the East Timor Crisis
   - Overseas Study Programs at Indiana University
   - Muslim Women: The Road to Empowerment
   - International Internship and Career Opportunities

Members of the organization have taken advantage of the international cuisine available in Bloomington. In the past, members have dined at Divino's, Little Tibet, Samira, and Puccini's La Dolce Vita.

Most recently, the ISSA has been involved in a number of outreach activities with the local community and elementary school students. The organization planned an outreach event, with other IU international student organizations, for Bloomington school children called Passport to Adventure. This program exposed pupils to different world cultures through the University's diverse international student community. The organization also planned a fund-raiser for Big Brothers, Big Sisters. In addition, ISSA also helped support the Indiana Consortium for International Program's (ICIP) Model United Nations for Indiana high school students in Indianapolis this past spring. ISSA members helped administer and supervise the proceedings for this event, which included over 200 high school participants.
