Indiana
Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy
History
Several individuals in the Indianapolis area who were interested in developing a society for spectrographers arranged an organizational meeting to be held on January 8, 1952. This meeting established the society's mission as the "discussion and exchange of ideas and information pertaining primarily to emission spectroscopy, but including any phase of spectroscopy". Regularly scheduled meetings would present a program related to some phase of spectroscopy and feature an invited speaker. In September 1952, the organization was named the Indiana Spectrographers Society.
The Indiana Spectrographers Society operated individually from 1952 until April 1954 when it was a national federation of spectrographic organizations be formed. At this time, the Indiana Spectrographers Society became a member of the National Federation of Spectrographic Societies. In 1958, the national federation of spectrographic societies unitied into one nation-wide organization, the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. The Indiana Spectrographers Society became a founding member, along with 13 other spectroscopy organizations, and has since been known as the Indiana Section of the Society of Applied Spectroscopy (ISSAS).
Today the Indiana Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy continues to fulfill the mission statement declared by the original Indiana Spectrographers Society in 1952. The ISSAS provides a forum for the exchange of information regarding current topics and research in the various fields of spectroscopy through its outstanding seminar series, a bimonthly newsletter, and World Wide Web publication.
