"What do you need from me in order
to begin work on my project?"
Text-based projects: Text should
be typed and in digital format, if possible, using tabs, rather
than the space bar, for column alignments and indents. Please call
our office if you need assistance with formatting.
Maps
(custom): We have a large data base of maps here in the office.
For very customized maps, such as those covering small land areas
or having historical boundaries, you will probably need to provide
us with a source map.
Graphs: Data sets or plots on graph
paper.
Presentations: Your preferences for
color, theme, and fonts; pictures you may wish to include; and typed copy.
Imaging: Digital files of your
presentation in PICT, TIFF or EPS format, together with b/w copies
of each image. Please remember to schedule three working days for
imaging.
Titleboards: Title dimensions, required
letter size and your preferences for type style and color.
Artwork for Publication: Font preference,
approximate dimensions for final published size and specs or samples from
your publisher.
For our Paperwork:
For charged orders, we will need an IU account number, or
you may pay by cash/check.
For Classroom Support orders, we will need course number(s),
title and annual enrollment for classes in which the graphics will
be used.
"What are your charges?"
Visuals for use in the classroom are designed and produced for faculty
without charge.
All other artwork is billed on a time and material basis. Our current
rate is $22/hr, except for illustration and animation, which are
charged at $25/hr. Laserprints, transparencies and lamination are
priced by the piece. Please call if you'd like to have a price list
sent to you.
"How do you handle production
involving copyright- protected materials?"
We always recommend that you secure permission from copyright owners
before using copyright-protected materials; however, we evaluate
requests for classroom visuals individually, in accordance with
the 1976 Fair Use Guidelines. Information on the fair use guidelines
is available here in the office, and we would be happy to send you
a copy if you'd like to learn more about them. As a rule of thumb,
we're able to copy two or three images from any one source for use
as overhead transparencies in an IU course.
Requests involving extensive copying should be referred to Kenneth
Crews, Manager of the IU Copyright Management Center, IUPUI (kcrews@iupui.edu)
for clarification.
