R541: Instructional Development and Production Process I

Course Description
This course introduces you to the entire multimedia production process. During this course, you will develop instructional products using a number of graphic, audio and video, presentation, and web development software. The emphasis of this course is on basic skills in writing, graphic design, interface design, scripting, prototyping, editing, formative evaluation, and quality assurance.
Course Activities
Readings and tutorials. Each week, you will do the assigned readings and review the tutorials that are intended to help you better understand the key topics of the course.
Class discussion. You are encouraged to participate in online asynchronous discussion using the course discussion board. In this course forum, you will post your responses to the readings and suggested discussion questions, then read and comment on peers’ postings. While exploring topics, and critiquing and refining ideas, you will receive guidance and feedback from the instructor.
Live chat. Live chat will take place once a week for about one hour. Hosted by the instructor, these regularly-held real-time sessions will bring the class together in a lively and informal setting.
Development and production projects. In this course, you will develop an informative multimedia product and an instructional web site that teaches a concept or principle. During each project, you will be asked to create interim deliverables for instructor feedback and after completing each project, you will submit a project report and reflection paper.
Web site critique. You will select one web site and provide a descriptive critique that identifies message design decisions and strategies operating in the site.
Design diary. You will be asked to keep a note of reflections while you go through the instructional development and production processes in this class. This reflection assignment is intended to help you better understand design principles and strategies and explore better design decisions for instructional products.
Peer critique. You will be encouraged to share your project progress with peers and provide feedback to one another. This peer collaboration will help you explore and refine ideas on your project and create quality products in the end.
Time commitment. This course may take about 10 hours per week: 1 to 2 hours completing the reading assignments, 2 to 3 hours participating in online discussion and live chat, and 3 to 5 hours working on individual projects.
