Distance Education: Instructional Systems Technology
R625: Designing Instructional Systems
Credit Hours: 3
Prerequisite(s): R521.
Course Description
This is an advanced course in instructional development. In this course, you solve real instructional problems of substantial scope, applying principles of planning, analysis, design, production, evaluation, implementation, and management. The emphasis of this course is on the development of consulting skills that facilitate the contracting, management and implementation phases of the instructional design project.
Course Activities
Readings. You will read the assigned text and articles that are intended to help you understand the key topics of the course.
Class discussion. You will be asked to participate in online asynchronous discussion using the course discussion board. In this course forum, you will post your responses to the assigned readings and suggested discussion topics, then read and comment on peers’ postings. Considering that consulting skills are best learned through personal experience and learning from the experiences of others, you will be strongly encouraged to share your consulting experience with peers. While exploring topics and critiquing and refining ideas, you will receive guidance and feedback from the instructor.
Live chat. Live chat will take place once a week for about one hour. Hosted by the instructor, these regularly-held one hour sessions will provide time for questions and answers with instructors and fellow students in a lively and informal setting.
Design project. You will complete an instructional design project during this class. For this project, you will be asked to find a client in the real world and set up a contract with the client on the deliverables for the project and the deadline dates for each deliverable. It will be like an independent study by which you will develop consulting skills with the clients. At several points during this project, you will create project management documentation for instructor feedback and submit the final product with project critique at the end of this course.
Time commitment. This course may take about 10 hours per week: 1 to 2 hours completing the reading assignments, 2 hours participating in online discussion and live chat, and 5 to 6 hours completing assignments.
Course Specific Requirement
None.
