Software Overview: Dragon NaturallySpeaking
Dragon NaturallySpeaking is an easy to use word processor controlled by voice commands. The user speaks into a headset, and the words appear on-screen. Dragon greatly reduces the use of hand, wrist, and finger movements. It's useful for people with the following conditions:
- carpal tunnel syndrome or other musculoskeletal disorders
- low vision or blindness (in conjunction with Jawbone)
- repetitive stress injury
- cerebral palsy
- traumatic brain injury
Using only your voice, Dragon lets you perform a variety of tasks three times faster than typing-at speeds of up to 160 words per minute. You can use Dragon to:
- create documents
- launch applications
- enter data into spreadsheets
- send e-mail
- fill in on-line forms
- browse the Web
Dragon is smart: Its speech recognition accuracy level is as high as 99 percent. And it "learns": The more you use Dragon, the more accurately it recognizes your speech.
Dragon features "continuous speech," which means that you can dictate without stopping between words. This allows for a more natural and relaxed method of dictation.
Dragon has an active vocabulary of approximately 30,000 words, and a backup vocabulary of about 250,000 words that can be quickly accessed. For different specialties or interests, it's easy to create custom vocabularies.
Dragon has several features for ease of use. You can create shorthand for frequently dictated phrases (names, addresses etc.) Dragon contains a text-to-speech utility that reads composed text in a computerized voice.
At IU, your voice files are automatically saved to your locker and referenced during each time you use Dragon.
On-line Help is available to users during their use of the program.
When you first use Dragon, you'll need to "train" the program to recognize your voice and speech patterns.
Assistive Materials:The staff at the ATAC has developed the Dragon User Guide to help you with the program.
