How to Apply

International Transfer

Apply Now

You have two options for applying to IU:

Application Checklist

Before you apply, make sure to review our transfer admission standards and priority dates. In addition to a completed online or paper application, you must submit the following items before we can start our review.

  • $65 application fee. If you apply online, you must pay the fee by credit card. If you apply on paper, please follow the instructions for submitting your application fee. We do not accept checks for international applications fees.
  • Document Cover Page (PDF). This form must be submitted with all other documentation you send to the Office of International Admissions.
  • Secondary school academic records. Secondary school records are required if you have completed less than one full year of studies or fewer than 26 semester hours (or 39 quarter hours) of transferable college course work. Please ask your secondary school to send your official academic record directly to IU. If the original is not in English, also include a certified, literal translation. In all cases, the record must be an official copy bearing an original stamp or seal. Learn more about country-specific requirements within our information for international freshman applicants.
  • Official transcript(s) from each college or university you have attended. Arrange for your official transcript(s) to be sent directly to IU at the time of application. U.S. and Canadian transcripts should be sent directly from the registrar to the IU Office of International Admissions. If you are studying in another country, please submit official copies of your academic record. If the original is not in English, also include a certified, literal translation. In all cases, the record must be an official copy bearing an original stamp or seal.
  • International Student Financial Documentation form (PDF) and supporting financial documentation. Federal regulations require students to demonstrate that they have the financial resources to support themselves and any dependents during their first year of study in the United States. We cannot review your application until we receive this information.
  • SAT/ACT scores. We require the SAT or the ACT, with the writing assessment(s), for all applicants who have completed fewer than 26 semester hours (or 39 quarter hours) of transferable college course work, unless you have been out of secondary school for more than three years. When you register for either test, make sure to have your scores sent to IU Bloomington. Our SAT code is 1324 and our ACT code is 1210.
  • English Proficiency/TOEFL score. You are required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores if you are a non–native English speaker applying to the Jacobs School of Music or for a second bachelor’s degree program in the College of Arts and Sciences, Kelley School of Business, Jacobs School of Music, or the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER). TOEFL scores are not required for most other applicants, but if you have taken the TOEFL, we encourage you to submit your scores to assist with academic advising. The testing service should report TOEFL scores directly to IU Bloomington. IU’s TOEFL code is 1324. All new international students must take IU’s English Proficiency Examination upon arrival at the university to determine if they must take any English courses. You must take any courses prescribed from the results of the examination. Fees for special part-time English courses are the same as for other courses; however, credits earned do not meet degree requirements. If the results of the proficiency examination indicate that full-time work in English is required, you will be assigned to the Intensive English Program (IEP). Students enrolled in the IEP do not take academic courses until they achieve adequate English proficiency. If you have serious doubts about your English ability and are not financially prepared to undertake the additional time and expense of an intensive English proram here, you should consider completing English study in your home country and delaying your application to a future term.
