We have exceptional schools of business and education, cutting-edge programs in informatics and biochemistry, a world-renowned music school, and an astonishing range of liberal arts programs that include folklore, history, and more than three dozen languages. We also help students prepare for graduate and professional school by offering preprofessional study and advising assistance for those interested in becoming doctors, lawyers, dentists, and other medical professionals.

Schools and The College

University Division

Most freshmen begin their studies in the University Division, where students fulfill requirements in order to be admitted to a major. If you designate an intended major on your application, your University Division advisor can give you expert, personalized advice about what courses to take, and in what order, for that major.

If you enter as an exploratory student, this will be your time to sample widely from the many academic opportunities available at IU and to select a major that interests and excites you. Either way, you will then proceed into one of the 14 degree-granting schools on campus after successfully fulfilling course requirements, a process that most students complete by the end of their freshman year.

Direct Admission

If you already know exactly what you want to study and have a strong high school record, you might consider direct admission into one of IU's undergraduate schools. The College of Arts and Sciences, the Kelley School of Business, the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, the School of Informatics, the School of Journalism, and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs all offer direct admission programs. Similarly, students who complete the application and audition process for the Jacobs School of Music are admitted directly into the school.

Preprofessional Study

If you're interested in a career in law, medicine, dentistry, optometry, or a related field, you can plan an undergraduate program designed to help you gain admission to a leading graduate or professional school.

IU's preprofessional programs are not majors themselves (we do not offer a premedical degree, for example). However, University Division's Health Professions and Prelaw Center is an excellent resource providing information about course selection and requirements, preparing for professional tests, and requirements for admission to professional schools.
