The average IU freshman takes four to six courses (about 15 credit
hours) per semester. With the flat tuition fee covering 12 to 17 credit
hours each semester, many students do take the full 17 hours, which can be
as few as four courses or as many as eight.
These sample freshman schedules show 14 to 16 hours a week in class and
they leave long stretches of time open for studying, friends, working out,
and student activities. When you arrive for New Student Orientation in the
summer, your academic advisor will help you put together a schedule that
works for you.
