Freshman Student Financial Aid

Indiana University is one of a few U.S. public universities that offers merit based scholarships to international undergraduate students. You can view scholarship information and eligibility requirements through the Office of Scholarships.

The application priority date for scholarship consideration for the fall 2009 semester is November 1, 2008. We will review applications received after this date for admission; however, for maximum scholarship consideration we recommend that you submit the application and all required supporting documents by November 1st.

Transfer Student Financial Aid

You can view scholarship information and eligibility requirements through the Office of Scholarships.

Graduate Student Fellowships, Associate Instructorships, Assistantships, and Employment

Some schools and departments offer fellowships and associate instructorships (assistantships) to graduate students. These awards range from $1,500 to $20,000, most commonly payable over a 10-month period. Assistantships usually include a full fee scholarship, which pays for all but approximately $500 per semester of your tuition and fees.

International graduate students should contact the department in which they intend to study for information regarding IU funding.

Awards are limited and usually require service to the department that offers the award. You must meet a very high level of English proficiency, especially for an associate instructor (AI) position. All AIs must have a minimum TOEFL of 213 on the computer-based exam, 550 on the paper based exam, or 80 on the Internet-based exam and must also pass the special Test of English Proficiency for International Associate Instructor Candidates in Bloomington before they begin teaching.

Employment and Alternative Resources for Financial Assistance

Please note that IU cannot issue a letter of admission and visa authorization to any international student who lacks sufficient financial resources to meet all expenses for at least one academic year. While on-campus employment permission may be granted, you cannot expect to earn more than a small portion of your yearly expenses through such employment. Further, you cannot use the possibility of such employment to show you have adequate financial resources before a visa is issued. A dependent on an F-2 visa cannot work. Note that assistantships and study awards are not considered employment according to immigration regulations.

If you wish to pursue alternate resources for financial assistance, please see the Financial Aid information for prospective students available from the Office of International Services.

Health and Accident Insurance Requirements

All international students at Indiana University are required to have health insurance for themselves and their families. The U.S. does not have a nationalized health care system, and medical care here is extremely expensive. If you need medical care and do not have insurance, you may find yourself owing thousands of dollars. The health insurance system offers you protection against these costs. Detailed information about health insurance and health insurance requirements can be found through the Office of International Services.

Dependents and Health Insurance Requirements

Spouses or children who accompany IU students and scholars must be enrolled in the Indiana University health insurance program or have equivalent insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in the United States. Insurance for dependents is not billed to your bursar account. You must purchase it separately within 15 days after their arrival in the country. J-1 and F-1 students may buy insurance for dependents from the IU Student Insurance Office. Detailed information about health insurance and health insurance requirements can be found through the Office of International Services.

2009-2010 Estimated Expenses for Dependents
Spouse $6,061 Spouses and children must have health insurance. See requirements. Tuition expenses for those who chose to take IU courses are NOT included in these estimates. The cost of health insurance is included.
First Child $5,504

* Students who bring a spouse or children must provide evidence that this additional amount will be available to meet expenses and must submit the financial document form. (PDF, 118 KB)
