Majors & Programs

IU is a major research university meaning we have the resources and faculty expertise to offer a huge range of majors, minors, certificates, and degrees. Our 13 undergraduate schools, plus the College of Arts and Sciences, give you 133 majors and 326 degree programs from which to choose. In most fields, graduate study through the doctorate level is available.

As a transfer student, you will be admitted into the University Division, the College of Arts and Sciences, or one of our undergraduate schools. The key factor in determining where you will be placed is how many hours of transferable college course work you have completed.

  • If you have completed fewer than 26 semester hours (or 39 quarter hours), you will automatically be placed into the University Division, where you will receive personalized advising to help you choose your program of study at IU.
  • If you have completed more than 26 semester hours (or 39 quarter hours), you will most likely be admitted directly into your chosen major, although there are some exceptions.

Specific School and Program Criteria

You will be admitted into the University Division if:

  • You know your projected area of study is:
    • Allied Health Sciences

Jacobs School of Music

If you would like to major in our Jacobs School of Music, you can be admitted directly if you:

  • Have completed at least 26 semester hours
  • Successfully audition and meet the school’s academic requirements

If you are admissible to IU based on academic work but do not pass the audition, you will need to choose a major outside of the School of Music. If you pass the audition but IU’s academic requirements for admission are not met, you will not be eligible for admission to IU. E-mail or call (812) 855-7998 for more information.

The following music programs do not have an audition component and students are admitted into the University Division:

  • Audio recording
  • Audio technology
  • Costume construction
  • Opera scenic technique
  • Stagecraft technology
  • String instrument technology

If you would like to major in our School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (in a program other than athletic training, sport marketing and management, or kinesiology—all-grade teacher preparation), and you have completed at least 26 semester hours, you will be admitted directly to your proposed major. Please note: you must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for direct admission into dietetics, human development/family studies, nutrition, and sport communication. Preprofessional Study

If you're interested in a career in law, medicine, dentistry, optometry, or a related field, you can plan an undergraduate program designed to help you gain admission to a leading graduate or professional school. While IU’s preprofessional programs are not majors themselves (we do not offer a premedical degree, for example), our Health Professions and Prelaw Center is an excellent resource providing information about course selection and requirements, admission test preparation, and professional school requirements.
