We are no longer accepting overnight visits for the spring semester. Visits will resume mid September.
What is the HOST program?
Our program is designed to give high school juniors and seniors a glimpse of life at IU. For 24 hours, you will essentially be an IU student. You will stay with and shadow one of our host students in a residence hall, attend classes, talk with professors, and see the campus through the eyes of a student. In order to maximize your HOST stay, a key aspect of the student HOST program is attending IU classes. For this reason, we do not offer HOST visits that would begin Friday evening or a Saturday to Sunday visit.
Who are the hosts?
Our hosts are undergraduate students who are members of the admissions
office student staff. Although they come from diverse backgrounds, our
hosts had many of your same questions and concerns as high school
students. We encourage you to ask them about their own college search
process and experiences.
What does the program cost?
The accommodations in the residence halls are free. Your host will be
provided with three $5 meal coupons which you may use in the residence
hall cafeterias and food courts. If you purchase a meal which exceeds $5,
you will be responsible for the additional cost. You can eat outside of
the residence halls, but you will be expected to pay for any meals not
covered by the three $5 meal coupons. We encourage you to bring money for
any activities or entertainment in which you might participate.
What do I need to bring?
You will be staying in a residence hall room with your student host.
Therefore, you should bring a sleeping bag, pillow, towel, and toiletries.
Casual clothing and comfortable walking shoes will serve for all occasions
during your visit. We recommend that you bring an umbrella and clothes
appropriate for the season. Indiana weather varies considerably, so come
prepared.
Where should I park?
If you plan to park your vehicle on campus during your overnight visit,
you will need a visitor's permit in order to avoid receiving a parking
ticket. Please make sure to indicate on the Overnight
Visit Request Form if you plan to bring your vehicle to campus so
we know to send a visitor's permit to your host. They will give the pass
to you upon your arrival.
Who do I contact if I'm not going to be able to meet my host on time?
If you experience any travel difficulties, call your host immediately.
If you are unable to reach your host, call the student directors. Their
home phone numbers will be included in the confirmation letter you
recieve. If you are unable to reach your host or one of the student
directors, you should contact the Office of Admissions at (812) 855-0661.
The office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) Monday
through Friday. We can be reached on many Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to
noon at (812) 855-2071. You can also leave a message with the center desk
of the residence hall in which you are staying.
What are my responsibilities as a program participant?
As an IU guest, we expect you to abide by the rules and regulations of
the university. These policies are designed to build a friendly, caring,
and safe atmosphere. When staying in a residence hall, all of the rules
and regulations that apply to IU students will apply to you. If you would
like a copy of the residence hall policies or the IU Code of Student Rights,
Responsibilities, and Conduct, we will be happy to send it or
provide one upon your arrival. We expect you to accept responsibility for
your own actions and for any mishap that might befall you as a result of
those actions. In return, Indiana University will accept responsibility
for any mishap, loss, or injury that is caused entirely as a result of a
wrongful act on the part of its employees or agents. Participants, as well
as the parent or guardian of participating students, are asked to sign a
Statement of Agreement, which will be enclosed with the confirmation
materials.
What should I remember to do?
- When arriving at the residence hall, please register at the center
desk. We must know how to reach you in case of an emergency.
- Notify the HOST directors if you need a parking pass.
- Bring emergency information (including phone numbers) to give to your
host.
- Make sure you ask questions, make notes, and utilize all the resources
available to you during your visit.
