Image of Teachers and Students

Welcome to Images of World Cultures, a web module designed to match the curriculum requirements for a social studies unit for Indiana sixth graders and to prepare local sixth-grade classes for a special thematic tour of the museum. This web module focuses on selected images from four areas of the Indiana University Art Museum’s collection of Western art: Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque. As the program expands to include the social studies curricula of Indiana seventh-grade classes, the museum plans to add future web modules highlighting art from additional areas of the collection, such as Asia, the Americas, and Africa.

Many people were involved in the creation of this module, from classroom teachers and their sixth-grade students to museum docents, education interns, and staff. With their assistance, artwork was selected, texts were prepared, and tours and resource materials were evaluated.

The web module was designed to be flexible, informative, and fun. The voice and content of this text is expressly for sixth-grade students. Click on the thumbnail images on each page to access information about that artwork. Accompanying each image is a timeline and a text with vocabulary highlighted. The teachers’ section provides important information on arranging tours of the art museum and using curriculum-based resources at the museum. The section titled “Take a Closer Look” poses questions and provides answers that prompt a closer look at each object. The section called “Did you know?” provides important facts about the object, its production, or the culture that produced it.
