Existing Green Features in Your IUB Residence Hall
RPS is already making changes to make your residence hall rooms green!

Student Room Area Rugs
Contract specifications for the vendor awarded the area rug contract each year includes not only requirements to use manufacturer overages for the material to make area rugs but also require the vendor to recycle old area rugs that are picked up each summer from our res. halls.

Student Room Carpet
RPS uses carpet tile because as carpet squares become damaged or soiled beyond being cleanable, they are able to replace individual squares instead of replacing an entire room’s worth of carpet.  The specific material that we are standardized on is manufactured by one of the industries leaders in sustainable manufacturing practices.

Corridor Carpet

RPS works with three installation groups that have relationships with an Indianapolis company who recycles all of our corridor carpet as it is replaced.

Student Room Furniture

RPS currently has two contracts set up with furniture manufacturers who operate using environmentally responsible practices from the way they actually make the products, the materials used in the products, the processes they use when to “reuse” waste within their facilities, and the design of the actual facilities where products are made.  Additionally, both manufacturers actually make the products that we order in facilities within 500 miles of Bloomington.

Student Room Window Treatment

With recent industry developments, RPS has been introduced to new products that are made with recycled content and still maintain the same characteristics of our current student room drapery material standards. We will be using this product in our newest renovation project at Briscoe and hope to be able to transition other residence hall drapery standards to the same products.

Upholstered Furniture

One benefit that IUB has over other universities is the ability to reuse upholstered material. With our own Upholstery Shop, we are able to rebuild and recover furniture as needed to reuse products and cut down on furniture waste. There are some sofas and furniture items within our system that we have had for 30 years!
