Message from the President Greetings, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2008/2009 school year. I am sure we are all looking forward to what ASA has to offer to the Indiana university community, especially its African students. As a Sierra Leonean and a junior biology student at our University, I am honored to lead such an outstanding organization, an organization that adds to the broad diversity in our community. Our events in the past have been quite successful, as the organization has used creative means to unify the African student body on campus. In so doing, we have attracted both students and faculty who are open to the cultural, social, political, and economic affairs of African countries. I hereby present to you your new executive members: Vice President- Isak Nti Asare Treasurer- Jeremiah Konfor Secretary- Vida Laudarji Public Relations- Elizabeth Eduehi Social Chair- Tiawanlyn Gongloe Communications- Temilade Linda Senbanjo Editors- Thabang Ngazimbi and Alice Kobba Educational Programmer- Amie Bayon Mandela Once said “I dream of the realization of the unity of Africa, whereby its leaders combine in their efforts to solve the problems of this continent”. I would like to emphasize that such a task described by Mandela would require a collective effort from those it is due. Therefore, our motto for this year and our goal is “United As One”.We need to bring our minds together and network to plan simple steps towards fulfilling Mandela’s dream of unity. Plans for this academic year include providing mentors and tutors for incoming students of African descent who may struggle with transitioning on campus. We plan to create a family, a bond between members of this organization through social events, sponsored intramural sport teams and volunteering in an effort to support the Bloomington community in which we reside. To further fulfill Mandela’s dream of unity, we will collaborate with African Student Organizations from other campuses around Indiana, creating a larger network of African students. Together, we can all work towards a United Africa. With its rich history of serving the African community at Indiana University, the African Students’ Association will continue to serve Bloomington’s African students and the community. We need your active involvement through participating and offering suggestions in order for us to achieve our goals. I strongly believe this is going to be a great year. Be Blessed Sincerely, Magortu Emmanuel (President)
