Barbara Bush, University Division
“It is a pleasure to
work with Barbara. She is always willing to go the extra mile to get the job
done, whatever it may be. When hurricane Katrina hit and the University held
out its hand to students from Tulane to come to IU, Barbara volunteered to come
in over the weekend to meet with students [who] might happen to come . . . .
Every semester Barbara gets many letters from students and parents expressing
their gratitude for her wonderful services and caring attitude. I think most
people feel that whatever the job, you enjoy it more when you are working
alongside good people. [O]n that score alone, Barbara makes a huge contribution
to University Division and the IUB campus.”
“Barbara shows her
service to the IUB campus through her strong sense of colleagueship. She helps
out at mandatory meetings for students on academic probation even though she
does not have to attend these Sunday afternoon meetings. Because of her
extensive knowledge of curricular requirements and IUB policies and procedures,
other advisors often go to her with their questions. I feel very fortunate to
work with Barbara, and know that I am a better academic advisor from watching
her talk with students and parents.”
MaryLou
Hosek, Department of Sociology
[MaryLou] is wonderful at
advising undergraduates – I’ve received many email notes from
students about her over the years . . . . In a recent ASA National Survey of
Sociology Undergraduates, 85% of our majors reported being ‘highly
satisfied’ with advising in the Department.
I consider the quality of MaryLou’s
advising and her long-term association with the Department to be key assets of
our undergraduate program. MaryLou is very highly thought of by our faculty as
well, who often ask her advice on the potential student interest in a course
they are proposing, how they might promote the sociology major in their
courses, or how they might advise a student going through a crisis.”
“The welfare of her students comes first
and there is no end to the amount of research or phone calls she will do to
assist a student with a problem. Her astounding knowledge of the IU system, its
courses, rules, and people provide her students and fellow advisors with
assistance well beyond the normal advisor role. She has volunteered to serve as
a mentor to new advisors for BAC and is always the first to contact new
advisors with an invitation to lunch and an offer of assistance.”
Cindy Moore, Department of
Psychological and Brain Sciences
“Excellent professional advising . . .
[s]he is first-rate in this core component . . . Wonderful rapport with
students; she treats them with respect in an outgoing and friendly manner.
Wonderful rapport with fellow workers (advisors, class schedulers, graduate
assistants, faculty) even under the most stressful circumstances. She is a team
player, unselfish, and always working towards the larger goal of excellence in
undergraduate education.”
“Cindy has been an outstanding advisor . .
. as well as a very dynamic and productive president of the Bloomington
Advisors’ Council. Cindy excelled this year not only as an advisor but as
adjunct faculty for her department . . . . The Department . . . found itself
without an instructor for an entry level class . . . [and] asked her to help
because of her extensive background in biology, a key component of the course.
Although it involved many late nights at work, [Cindy] stepped up to the task
in an exemplary manner. She not only maintained her advising load, but managed
to keep office hours for the students in her class as well.
“I hesitated to nominate Cindy for this
award only because I wondered about the propriety of giving it to the BAC
president and a person who was instrumental in its creation. I then reflected
on the meaning of the award in terms of advising and I realized that Cindy is a
perfect candidate and one that I think Terri Nation would be pleased
with.”
