MATH-S 343: Differential Equations I - Honors
Professor Peter Sternberg*
Section 30574 TuTh 9:30-10:45am Cedar C116

Overview:

This course will focus on four aspects of the field of ordinary differential equations:

  • modeling physical phenomena with ODE's
  • theoretical results on ODE's including theorems on existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of solutions on initial data.
  • methods for obtaining explicit solutions
  • analysis of the qualitative behavior of solutions in the absence of an explicit solution

  • We will focus on the case of first order linear and nonlinear ODE's as well as second order linear ODE's. There will be a brief look at higher order linear ODE's and the course will conclude with a discussion of infinite series solutions to second order linear ODE's.
