MUS-Z 284: Music in Global Cinema
Professor Daniel Bishop*
Section 35273 MW 2:30-3:45pm

--- Meets with another MUS-Z 284 ---

This course aims to develop your knowledge of global cinema through the study of the musical soundtrack. Our focus will be on the ways in which global cultures, musical practices, and film styles have intersected through the medium of film music. We will study the variety of ways in which the concept of world music and world cinema have been articulated, compare various global film music practices with more familiar Hollywood styles, and introduce some of the ideological issues that are at stake in discussions of global cinema.

No musical background is required other than a willingness to engage in active listening and descriptive writing. Coursework will include frequent and substantial film viewing outside of class, along with a heavy emphasis on written assignments and an in-class presentation.
