Z304 explores the important issue of building organizational success from the perspective that it is the talent of the organization that is the ultimate driver of how well an organization builds competitive advantage. The primary focus of the class is on unlocking the "human equation" in business and the management techniques for creating long-lasting above average economic performance. We explore not only the role of talent but also the processes for engaging this talent to solve business problems, innovate and execute organizational strategies.

The class is taught from the perspective of the general manager and utilizes multiple teaching techniques to demonstrate how effective organizations are created. Ultimately, we seek to understand why it is that some organizations learn while others do not, how to engage their human resources. We first seek to understand the science of management and its evolution towards high commitment management practices. Further, we question the role of business in society and take a broader, stakeholder perspective that relies on understanding and building organizational purpose, beyond the profit motive, that inspires and accelerates human performance.
