Who are our allies, who are our enemies, and how can we make peace in
the world? How can we achieve international security and how can we
secure the well-being of refugees and others at risk? Wendy
Chamberlin
has been working on such questions for more than 30 years, serving in
the U.S. Foreign Service around the world, including Laos, Malaysia,
Morocco, Pakistan, and Zaire, as well as for major international
organizations. Chamberlin was a key figure in brokering Pakistan's
cooperation with the U.S. war against terrorism in the aftermath of 9/11
during her tenure as ambassador (2001-02). She has also served as
Director of Global Affairs and Counter-Terrorism at the National
Security Council and Deputy in the Bureau of International
Counter-Narcotics and Law Programs. Additionally, Chamberlin has worked
for the UN as Deputy High Commissioner for the UN High Commissioner for
Refugees, where she supervised the $4 billion humanitarian budget.
Described as "one of the world's experts on Iraqi refugees," she will be
in Indiana next week to participate in the International Interfaith
Initiative's conference on "the Confluence of Religion and Politics."
Chamberlin has appeared on ABC, Al Jazeera, BBC, CBS, CNN, FOX, NBC,
NPR, and the Tavis Smiley Show and has been published in the Washington
Post and the International Herald Tribune. Her awards and honors
include the Howard Wilkins Jr. Award for outstanding Deputy Chief of
Mission and an honorary doctorate from Northwestern University.
Ambassador Chamberlin was invited to campus by the Student Foreign
Policy Initiative, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that seeks
to
foster a more informed, elevated student discourse on foreign affairs; and the supper is co-sponsored by the
Initiative and the Wells Scholars Program.
From 3 to 5:15 p.m. the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 9, Ambassador
Chamberlin will deliver a public talk in the Moot Court Room
(Room 123) of IU's Maurer School of Law about the role of international
law and interfaith diplomacy in finding solutions for the Iraqi refugee
crisis and the Obama administration's policies regarding Pakistan. Time
will be reserved after the talk for Q&A. The discussion, which is free
and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the International Law Society
and the Center for the Study of Global Change.
