With no rules in place, could we make our own society? What would it
look like? Would power or reason prevail? In William Golding's
acclaimed novel Lord of the Flies, he tells the story of a group
British boys, stranded on an uninhabited island, who must govern
themselves. Its exploration of human nature and the tension between
individual well-being and the common good has earned it a place on many
lists of best English-language novels, including lists selected by
readers, editors, and TIME magazine (for novels from 1923 to 2005).
Golding went on to win the 1983 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Nigel Williams' adaptation of the controversial classic will be
to downtown Bloomington in September by Cardinal Stage Company as part
of the IU College of Arts and Sciences fall themester exploration of
Connectedness: Networks in a Complex World. Join fellow honors students
for the opening night performance on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
