HHC Mixer at the IU Art Museum's Coffeehouse Night:
The Beat Goes On!

September 4, 2008

At the HHC mixer, students, faculty, and staff had the chance to meet one another and usher in the new semester in conjunction with the IU Art Museum's first Coffeehouse Night of the semester, which featured the art and poetry of the Beat generation.

HHC students Samantha Kolakowski and Alexander Murphy pose after taking a moment to create some Beat style poetry.

Samantha Kolakowski and Alexander Murphy's poems:

the silent moon said deathless families
which have killer boys will constantly
get the glittering appletree above earth
we should excuse thought he proclaimed

the fish stands but the lady's pacing

The line is long for the coffee and sweet treats served at the Angles Cafe and Gift Shop, but it is well worth the wait!

HHC student Jordan Simpson and IU students Scott Eberhard, Erin McCarthy, and Eric Daniel take a brief break from their conversation to smile for the camera as they sit outside the Cafe.

I ask HHC students Victor Rusu and John Murray to pose for a picture. They then insist that I be in a picture, too!

HHC student John Murray poses with HHC staff member Hannah Dubina.

Students, faculty, and staff mingle outside one of the museum's galleries, where the museum was highlighting art of the Beat era and offering poetry readings.

Since the evening featured poetry as well as art, the HHC's literary magazine, Labyrinth, had a display. Callie Taylor, a former co-facilitator of the magazine, and Adam Ramey, one of this year's facilitators, stand beside their poster and an array of past and present publications.

Haley Waltman, the other Labyrinth facilitator this year, joins Adam Ramey at the magazine's table.

New HHC Dean Matthew Auer is the celebrity of the hour: a throng of students, faculty, and staff gather around him throughout the evening!

Extracurricular programming intern Amy Andreas chats with HHC professor Gareth Evans.

Former HHC staff member Eriko Atagi, HHC students Michael Sampson-Akpuru and Austin Piech, IU student Jordan Kilpin, and another student take a break at one of the tables outside the first floor gallery.

Some of the other poetry that students created at the Beat poetry display:

warm underworld eyebeams
suppose Walt Whitman drops
spreadeagled petals may war again

~*~

The quicksilver couch
of wheat ear delicacy
which broomstick-angel climbs
and charleychaplin perfumed

~*~

above imagination animals form
America looking old you
touch the underworld whose sand
did disappear

~*~

The snow poet the absurd for grocery
with resurrection ocean dear my air not
