 —  Charlie Savage Discussion Supper

The Obama Presidency and the Politics of Change

Discussion Supper with Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalist Charlie Savage
of The New York Times

February 10, 2009

Following a discussion panel on the topic of the expansion of executive power from Lincoln to Obama, students had the opportunity to enjoy a discussion supper with panel member Charlie Savage, a journalist for The New York Times who won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on presidential signing statements while working for The Boston Globe. Panelist Michael Grossberg, the Sally M. Reahard Professor of History and an adjunct professor of law at IU as well as the co-director of the IU Center for Law, Society, and Culture, also joined students for the dinner, which was co-sponsored by the Wells Scholars Program.

IU history and law professor Michael Grossberg speaks with the students at his table during the dinner.

Charlie Savage talks to students about presidential signing statements: both the way they were used during Bush's presidency and their likely use by others in present and future administrations.

After the supper, Savage chats with HHC student CJ Lotz.

HHC student Domini Martin, a longtime fan of Savage's work who also grew up in his hometown, poses for a picture with him after the supper.

Following the supper, Savage poses with members of the student group ABE at IU (from left, HHC student Ronak Shah, John Gillard, and HHC students Ian Thake, Aasiya Mirza, Erin Chapman, and Tarlie Townsend).
