Dr. David Baker is a jazz celebrity of international renown,
having been
named an Indiana Living Legend in 2001 and honored with the Living Jazz
Legend Award in 2007. A nominee for both the Pulitzer Prize and Grammy
Award and a winner of an Emmy, Baker chairs the Department of Jazz
Studies at IU and serves as the artistic and musical director of the
Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Baker has composed more than
2000 works, recorded 65 albums, and written 70 books and 400 articles.
The April 25th concert will feature "a battle" of two big bands, playing
masterpieces of the swing era: one band conducted by Professor Baker
and the second by Brent Wallarab, who plays lead trombone in the
Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, is a Specialist in Jazz for the
Smithsonian, and is a visiting faculty member in the IU Jacobs School of
Music. Wallarab has performed with and arranged for musical icons as
diverse as Ray Charles, J.J. Johnson, Benny Carter, Wynton Marsalis, and
the Count Basie Orchestra.
The evening's special guest performers will include
the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition award-winner Delores King
Williams and Emmy Award-winning vocalist Everett Greene,
back by popular demand following last year's performance.
