IU Traditions: A Fireside Chat with
University Chancellor Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis

Monday, March 30, 2009 * 7-8:15 p.m. * HHC Great Room * Refreshments Included
SIGN-UP REQUIRED (See Below for RSVP Details)

University Chancellor Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis What are the traditions that define IU? The culture that makes this remarkable place like no other? How much do you know about your university? As part of the upcoming celebration of the founding of IU, we invite you to join University Chancellor Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis, one of the major administrators on campus for more than a quarter century, for a fireside chat about Indiana University's history and heritage.

What did New York Times crossword puzzle editor Will Shortz major in while an undergraduate at IU? Why is there no period after the B in Herman B Wells?

After opening remarks by the chancellor on IU traditions and culture -- from the historic to the romantic to the quirky -- you will have the opportunity to ask questions and share your own IU experiences. Light refreshments will be served, and a short IU trivia contest (with a prize awarded!) will be held at the start of the program.

Chancellor Gros Louis's grandfather was a chief in what Native American tribe? Do you know who was the only other person to hold the position of University Chancellor in IU's almost 190 year history?

Gros Louis has lived and seen a lot of history. Imagine: When Gros Louis arrived on the Bloomington campus, the Musical Arts Center, Art Museum, Assembly Hall, and the main (now Wells) library had not yet been built. Bobby Knight was an assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy, and there were no personal computers.

Who was IU's president in 1964? What U.S. opera house has the only opera stage larger than the Musical Arts Center?

Since coming to IU in 1964 as a faculty member in the departments of English and comparative literature, Gros Louis has served in many positions, including more than 20 years as the chief executive of the Bloomington campus, most recently carrying the titles of senior vice president for academic affairs and Bloomington chancellor until he was named university chancellor in 2006.

Seating is limited, so please RSVP to hdubina, noting your name, e-mail address, field(s) of study, and year in school. The program is open to any IU undergraduate. We look forward to seeing you!
