IU's Honors College is named for Edward L. Hutton, an alumnus of
Indiana
University and a prominent businessman and philanthropist. He grew up
in Bedford, Indiana, during the Depression; earned bachelor's and
master's degrees from IU; served in the U.S. Army in Germany; and helped
rebuild the German economy after the Second World War. His success in
the world of business in the years that followed led him to become
chairman of Chemed Corp. and of Omnicare Inc. Mr. Hutton has said his
"years of living and working abroad were the key to [his] development as
a person and success as a businessman." Among his many gifts to the
university Mr. Hutton established an endowment in 2003 for the
International Experiences Program, which provides grants to enable IU
students to study, work, or engage in service abroad; and in 2005-6 he
provided the funds for the new home of the Hutton Honors College.
