Frank Loesser, an American songwriter who wrote the music for
such
Broadway hits as Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business
Without
Really Trying, wrote the music, lyrics, and book for The Most
Happy
Fella
(1956), as much musical theatre as opera. IU voice professor and
legendary baritone Timothy Noble will star as Tony Esposito, who
falls
in love with a young and beautiful waitress named Rosabella. When Tony
and Rosabella strike up a correspondence, Rosabella asks Tony to send
her a picture of himself. Tony, who is self-conscious about being
middle-aged and rather unattractive, instead sends her a picture of his
handsome foreman Joe. If you want to know how things turn out, you'll
just have to come and see for yourself!
The
evening includes a special pre-performance talk with IU voice
professor and two-time Grammy winner Sylvia McNair, who will
talk
about
her stellar career and the roles she has sung, including Rosabella in
The Most Happy Fella at the 2007 Ravinia Festival. Sylvia McNair
possesses the virtuosity to sing across a wide array of musical genres,
from opera to musical theater to jazz. Over the span of her 25-year
career, she has made more than 70 audio recordings and has performed in
concert for Pope John Paul II and the U.S. Supreme Court. McNair has
soloed with many of the major European and American opera houses and has
been awarded two honorary Doctor of Music degrees, one from Westminster
Choir College and one from Indiana University.
