ENTERING THE HUTTON HONORS COLLEGE
By Invitation:
For Fall 2013, students admitted to IU-Bloomington will be automatically
invited if they meet one of the following sets of criteria:
31 ACT or 1350-1380 SAT and 3.95 or top 5% class rank
32-33 ACT or 1390-1460 SAT and 3.90 GPA or top 7.5% class rank
34-36 ACT or 1470+ SAT and 3.85 GPA or top 10% class rank
For students entering fall 2013, if you submit more than one set of scores, we will consider the
highest critical reading and math component scores for the SAT or the highest combined composite score
for the ACT (the composite score based on the average of the highest scores for each subtest). Please
follow this link to see how ACT scores are derived
here. When students apply for
admission to IU, whichever cumulative GPA on the student's transcript is higher (weighted or unweighted)
will be considered for admission and scholarship consideration.
Test scores (SAT or ACT) plus class rank or cumulative GPA
MUST be provided when applying to IUB in order to be considered for Hutton Honors
College automatic invitation and for the Hutton Honors College Scholarship.
November 1: Deadline for Hutton Honors College Scholarship consideration. All application materials for
admission to IUB must be submitted on-line or postmarked by November 1.
All applicants who want to be guaranteed scholarship consideration, especially for the most prestigious
awards, should submit a completed Selective Scholarship Application (SSA), including letters of
recommendation, by December 1st. If your completed SSA is submitted after December 1st, you will
still be considered for HHC Scholarships if funding continues to be available. HHC Scholarships are
awarded on a rolling basis, and there is no guarantee there will be scholarship funding available for
those applying after the December 1st deadline.
If your IUB application is
not complete by November 1, but you meet our
automatic invitation requirements, we will
continue to extend invitations on a space-available basis, but you will
not be allowed to apply for the Hutton Honors College Scholarship. To
learn more about what it means to be a Hutton Honors College student,
please read our FAQ here.
By Petition: If you are not selected to apply to the
Hutton Honors College and you have been admitted to IUB, you may petition for admission to our program. We are especially
interested in highly motivated students who have taken advanced
placement, accelerated, or honors courses in high school, and who show
evidence of creativity and leadership, as well as a demonstrated
interest in participating in the HHC curriculum and community. If your
petition is approved and you are selected for invitation, you will
not be eligible to apply for the Hutton Honors College
Scholarship, but you will be able to take advantage of all the other
opportunities all HHC students enjoy.
Please send the following materials to Jill Baker, Director of Admissions and Recruitment, as soon as possible but no later
than March 1 of your high school senior year:
-
A brief letter explaining why you would like to enter our program.
Be sure to include your full name, address and IU student I.D.
number in this letter!
- A letter of recommendation from a high school faculty
member who has taught you in an academic course.
-
A copy of your high school transcript.
AFTER STARTING AT IU
Students who do not enter the Hutton Honors College as incoming freshmen
may
still be eligible for admission if their academic work during their first
semester at IU is outstanding. After completion of that semester, you may
ask that your record be reviewed if you are interested in participating in
Hutton Honors College courses and programs. To be considered for admission
at
that time, you must have completed, during your first full semester at IU,
a minimum of 14 graded academic credits (grades of S for Satisfactory will
not be counted), and you must have maintained a 3.7 GPA.
TRANSFER STUDENTS: Transfer students must complete one semester on the IUB
campus and earn a minimum 3.7 GPA while enrolled in at least 14 solid academic
credit hours. Once you have fulfilled these two requirements, please call our
receptionist at 812-855-3555 to request an appointment with one of our academic
advisors.
PURSUING SCHOOL AND DEPARTMENTAL HONORS
Many IU schools and departments offer honors programs of their own for
their undergraduate majors, and many Hutton Honors College students choose
to
pursue these programs. Requirements vary, but all involve taking specified
classes and maintaining a minimum grade point average. Most also require a
senior thesis or comparable large-scale project. Contact your department's
or school's honors advisor as soon as possible after declaring your major.
