HIEP Grant Application Deadlines
for Summer awards 5 p.m. Friday before Spring Break
for Fall awards 5 p.m. Friday after Spring Break
for Academic Year awards 5 p.m. Friday after Spring Break

***Failure to abide by these deadlines and instructions will result in the disqualification of your application!***
***All print-outs must be two-sided front & back (ie. duplex)***


Checklist for IU Office of Overseas Study Programs
Students enrolling in an overseas study program that is administered, sponsored, or co-sponsored by IU's Office of Overseas Study must submit all of the following material by the deadline:

  1. On-line Application:
    Our secure on-line application form consists of 27 questions and one essay. On question #25 Faculty Recommender, please do NOT list a faculty member; instead, please put "N/A"

  2. Notice of Acceptance:
    Submit a duplex print-out of the acceptance letter/e-mail sent to you by IU's Office of Overseas Study. If you have not been officially accepted into your program, you can still apply before the deadline; just submit a duplex print-out of a letter/e-mail indicating that you have applied. Once you are officially accepted, you must submit a duplex print-out of your official acceptance notice.

  3. Unofficial IU Transcript:
    From your OneStart account, print a copy of your transcript as a duplex print-out.

  4. Verify!
    All print-outs must be duplex (ie. two-sided front & back, not two copies)! You may drop your items off in person at the Hutton Honors College or send them by campus mail. It is your responsibility to make sure that the Hutton Honors College has received all of your material by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered. To verify, please call us at 812-856-1016 or stop by the Hutton Honors College.

***Please check here to verify if your program is through IU's Office of Overseas Study. If your program is NOT on this list, then you must follow the non-IU Office of Overseas Study application procedures listed below.***


Checklist for non-IU Office of Overseas Study Programs
Students enrolling in a for-credit overseas program that is not administered, sponsored, or co-sponsored by IU's Office of Overseas Study must submit all of the following material by the deadline (note: this includes departmental programs not directly run by IU's Office of Overseas Study and/or all for-credit programs):

  1. Travel Release Form

  2. Notice of Acceptance:
    Submit a duplex print-out of the acceptance letter/e-mail from the program organizing your trip abroad (ie. your department, other university, overseas organization, etc). If you have not been officially accepted into your program, you can still apply before the deadline; just submit a duplex print-out of a letter/e-mail indicating that you have applied. Once you are officially accepted, you must submit a duplex print-out of your official acceptance notice.

  3. Unofficial IU Transcript:
    From your OneStart account, print a copy of your transcript as a duplex print-out.

  4. Faculty Recommendation Waiver Form:
    This form contains guidance on preparing letters of recommendation (what points to address, what to include in the letter, etc). If your faculty recommender wants their recommendation letter to remain confidential, then sign this form. Your recommendation letter must come from a Faculty member as defined by Indiana University. Letters from non-faculty are not accepted. Use IU's
    Address Book to verify your recommender's status at IU. It must say "Faculty" under "Affiliation." Faculty may submit their recommendation letters via e-mail from their IU accounts to: hiep[at]indiana[dot]edu

  5. On-line Application:

Checklist for Independent Travel & non-credit Service Trips
Students traveling independently and/or participating in non-credit service trips must submit all of the following material by the deadline:

  1. Travel Release Form

  2. Proof of Travel:
    Must include a duplex print-out of a travel itinerary as well as some form of proof of travel (ie. volunteer organization notice of acceptance, airplane tickets, copy of a valid country visa, hotel accomodation receipt, etc.)

  3. Unofficial IU Transcript:
    From your OneStart account, print a copy of your transcript as a duplex print-out.

  4. Faculty Recommendation Waiver Form:
    This form contains guidance on preparing letters of recommendation (what points to address, what to include in the letter, etc). Your recommendation letter must come from a Faculty member as defined by Indiana University. Letters from non-faculty are not accepted. Use IU's

Checklist for BUS-G 256 and BUS-P 255 students
Students traveling as part of the Emerging Economies class or Business in a 'Flat' World class must submit all of the following material by the deadline:

  1. Travel Release Form

  2. Faculty Recommendation Waiver Form:
    This form contains guidance on preparing letters of recommendation (what points to address, what to include in the letter, etc). If your faculty recommender wants their recommendation letter to remain confidential, then sign this form. Your recommendation letter must come from a Faculty member as defined by Indiana University. Letters from non-faculty are not accepted. Use IU's
    Address Book to verify your recommender's status at IU. It must say "Faculty" under "Affiliation." Faculty may submit their recommendation letters via e-mail from their IU accounts to: hiep[at]indiana[dot]edu

NOTE: Your acceptance into BUS-G256/BUS-P255 serves as your HIEP grant application, so please do NOT submit an on-line HIEP application.


Once an award is made, you must complete the following:

Post Travel Requirements:

  • Every recipient of an HIEP award is required to submit an essay and at least one photo after their travel abroad. Please visit our Essay and Photos page for specific details and sample essays and photos.
  • Additionally, recipients of named scholarship awards may be asked to provide further information or to meet with donors to our program.
