2008 IEP PHOTOS OF THE YEAR
Experiencing New Horizons!
In our first ever photo contest at the International Experiences
Program we received almost 100 photos from over 50 different student
photographers. The images ranged from great to exceptional and
choosing 5 that we felt best exemplified the experience of
international education was a very difficult task. Even now there are
a few unselected favorites we look at and wonder why we couldn't have used
them.
However, in the end these five stood out, often for different reasons,
as beautiful photos, unique shots, and examples of the
open-mindedness and sense of perspective we hope all our awardees
carry while abroad.

"Playa Michigan" by Hana Ros
Last summer I studied abroad in Cuernavaca, Mexico for 6 weeks on an
IU program. The town, La Ciudad de Eterna Primavera (City of Eternal
Spring) was beautiful. However, this photo is from a secluded beach
we went camping on near Acapulco where a family cooked for us.
"Bridge to Nature" by Carlin Ma
Between my freshman and sophomore year of high school, I had the
privilege of traveling to Germany for three weeks as a participant
with Carmel High School and Marie Curie Gynasium exchange program.
Primarily, we stayed in Hohen-Neuendorf, a suburb of Berlin, but for
three glorious days, we took an excursion to Dresden. There in
Dresden, we took a ferry down the Elbe River to climb the Sandstone
Mountains, which is where this picture was created. The sheer
reaching vastness and unfathomable heights created a distinct feeling
that makes any person feel in awe

"One More Glimpse of Her" by Jodi Frank
Every time the three of us started to walk away we couldn't resist turning
back for just one more glimpse of her. We caught our shadows this time
longing to meet the Eiffel Tower's base as her peak reached for the
clouds. Paris was only a weekend adventure, but it was there we realized
the meaning of our new found friendship and promised to one day meet again
inside the beautiful city as long as she was still standing.
"Into the Sahara on Camel" by Melissa Troyer
This photo was taken in the Sahara desert in eastern Morocco.
It was taken on a two-hour trek into the Sahara on camel,
after which we were able to watch the sun set from the top of a sand
hill and then sleep under the desert stars for a night. It was taken
while traveling during a study abroad program in Aix-en-Provence,
France. The girl pictured is another IU student, Anna.
