PALMER-BRANDON PRIZE 2003 COMPETITION:
TWO WINNERS WILL EACH RECEIVE $20,000
Deadline: 5pm, April 4, 2003
The College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) announces the Palmer Brandon-Prize
competition for students majoring in the humanities. COAS will make two
awards of at least $20,000 each. These prizes will be paid directly to the
winners; however recipients may elect to have the prize money applied
directly to tuition costs. The Palmer-Brandon Prizes are possible thanks
to a gift made to the IU College of Arts and Sciences in the 1980s.
Nominations will have to come from faculty, but students should alert
faculty if they would like to be nominated.
To be eligible for a Palmer-Brandon Prize, a student must:
- Be a current third-year, full-time student
- Plan to graduate in May or August 2004
- Be majoring in the Humanities, broadly defined
Nominees are expected to be among the top 1% of students in the College
of Arts and Sciences in terms of intellectual ability and academic
achievement. Nominees will be asked for a personal statement that
outlines their career goals and winners will be expected to submit a
report after graduation explaining to the selection committee how the
prize enabled them to further their education. The full list of required
materials for nomination is appended to the COAS announcement
here.
The prize is based on merit, without regard to financial need.
Aspiring prize winners must be nominated by a member of the COAS faculty,
whose detailed letter of nomination and support should reach the
committee by Friday, April 4, 2003. Nominees will also need two
additional letters of support from COAS faculty members. All
nominating and supporting letters should be addressed to The
Palmer-Brandon Prize Selection Committee.
The Palmer-Brandon selection committee will be composed of members of the
COAS humanities faculty. The committee will select five or six
finalists to interview on May 5 and 6, 2003. Winners will be honored at
an event in September, 2003.
