Hutton Honors College
— HHC Students Garner Goldwater Scholarships
Lin and DeLoughery Win Goldwater ScholarshipsJunior Sibo Lin and sophomore Aaron DeLoughery, both Hutton Honors College students, have been named Goldwater Scholars for the 2007-2008 academic year. Lin and DeLoughery were among 317 undergraduatescholars selected by the Goldwater Foundation from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science and engineering students nationwide. The foundation awards one- and two-year scholarships to sophomores and juniors on the basis of academic merit. The scholarship can be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
In its nineteen-year history, the Foundation has awarded 5,202 scholarships worth approximately fifty-one million dollars and the Goldwater Scholars Program has garnered the attention of postgraduate fellowship programs. Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 69 Rhodes Scholarships and 86 Marshall Awards. Six of the 44 Marshall Awards given in 2006 were to Goldwater Scholars. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established in 1986 in honor of Sen. Barry M. Goldwater to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. For more information, visit the foundation's Web site. Lin, a junior from Evansville, Indiana, pursues a double major in
chemistry and math. He has participated in research with Assistant
Professor of Chemistry and Informatics Mu-Hyun Baik where he explores
catalytic systems though computer simulation. He also volunteers at
Wonderlab, Bloomington's children's science museum, where he helps
visitors and conducts some tabletop science experiments. Lin hopes to
pursue a Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry and anticipates studying relevant
questions in biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, or materials science
involving catalysis, in either academia or industry. During the spring of
2007, he studied at St. Hugh's College of Oxford (UK) where he continued
his science studies and took second and third-year chemistry courses.
DeLoughery, a rising junior from Newcastle, Indiana, is a biology major.
He is a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, the chemistry fraternity on campus. His
tentative future goal is to teach biology and conduct research on
immunology.
