The IU Premed Summer Experience Program provides interested pre-medical students
information about volunteer or internship opportunities in hospitals or other clinical settings around the USA.
Successful applicants to Medical Schools typically have a wide range of volunteer experience, with previous exposure to clinical
situations highly favored by admission committees. This program makes it possible for IU students to get that kind of experience.

How does it work?
IUPSEP has obtained information from hospitals across the country.
Updated contact information and other
details about the opportunities these clinical settings offer is located
on the web-accessible database. Students are able to search these
entries and make contact with the volunteer coordinators at the locations they are interested in volunteering at.

How do I volunteer?
Once you have chosen a clinal setting, it is up to YOU to start the application process.
Contact the hospital as soon as possible, for some programs have deadlines or a limited number of positions available. When
calling, tell the volunteer director that you are a pre-medical student
from IU who is interested in a summer volunteer position with as much
patient/doctor contact as possible.
The emergency room, operating/recovery room, and nursing units are usually good areas in
which to volunteer.
What kinds of things will I get to do?
Be aware that there are very few internships offered and one that pays
is very rare! Most likely you will be asked to restock medical
supplies, handle filing and other administrative tasks, or other duties that don't involve security or patient confidentiality. Don't
be shy to ask about shadowing, and use your time to build relationships
with staff and ask intelligent questions.
Can anyone help me?
