HSA Information Guide
What is the Honors Student Association?
The Honors Student Association is a group of honors students who meet
regularly to plan social, academic and service opportunities to further
the mission of the Hutton Honors College. HSA provides the opportunity for
students to work in small groups to create and organize events that
enhance the experience of honors students, and to demonstrate through
service to the campus and community, the commitment honors students share
to give back to the communities to which they belong. Honors students
often become the leaders on the IU campus, and many students find HSA a
wonderful way to begin serving their fellow students.
Meet the 2007-08 Officers and Committee Chairs
Who can join HSA?
Any HHC student is welcome and encouraged to join!
Possible HSA committees:
Extracurricular: this committee's charge is to create
community-building events for the Honors Student Association (HSA)
membership, and initiate and support special activities to foster a sense
of identity within the Hutton Honors College (HHC). A sub-group could
focus on supporting the extra-curricular programming efforts of the HHC
and work closely with Charlene Brown, Director of
Extracurricular Programming. Special work groups might include:
- HSA social events-movies, dinners, and other social events to
encourage a sense of community within HSA
- HHC special events-signature events to make HHC students more
aware of being part of an organization
- Speakers for HSA meetings
- Work with Charlene Brown on special programming
Diversity: this committee's focus would be to highlight the
diversity within the HHC and work to connect students to the diverse
cultural events and organizations on campus. A responsibility would be to
liaise with cultural centers to promote cultural events to HHC students
and possibly create a listserv announcing up-coming events. The members of
this committee will serve as ambassadors for visiting underrepresented
student groups and will work with Richelle Brown,
multicultural outreach coordinator.
Fund Raising/Marketing: this committee's goal would be to raise
funds for special events, and also to raise the visibility of the HHC on
campus and of the HSA within the HHC. Works with HSA advisor. (Possible
Logo subcommittee?)
Volunteer: students on this committee would be charged with
organizing several signature volunteer events over the year for honors
students to participate in. Students could also choose to represent the
Honors College in events held by other campus organizations, and to
support other HHC volunteer opportunities (for example through the
mentoring program and the community service program.) Works with
Christy Borders and HSA advisor.
Membership/Communication: works to recruit HSA members and
officers. Serves as liaison to HSA membership through email list-serve.
Students are encouraged to put together a newsletter once or twice a
semester reflecting the events and opportunities connected to HHC. Works
with HSA advisor.
How do I join a committee?
Please indicate on your HSA application the top three committees you are
interested in working on in your order of preference. If you have other
ideas for possible committees, please indicate your suggestions on your
application.
When will our first meeting be?
You will soon be contacted by email about an upcoming call out meeting for
HSA. You will receive an application at that meeting. The first
regularly scheduled meeting will be announced for around the middle of
September.
When will we be electing officers?
Officers will be elected during the semester after committees have been
formed and HSA members have had the opportunity to get to know each other.
