Conceptual Framework: Commitment to TechnologyWhile technology may not be mentioned directly in our conceptual framework, its role is strongly inferred in several ways. Among the categories of Knowledge and Multiple Forms of Understanding promoted by our programs and courses is proficiency in the use of instructional technology. Through direct experience using various forms of instructional technology, candidates learn how to create forms of Meaningful Experience and Personalized Learning for students. Modern communication and computer technology facilitates the realization of these important elements of our conceptual framework offering candidates myriad possibilities to bring the virtual world into the classroom. To promote the appropriate use of technology all IUB teacher education students are required to take W200 Using Computers in Education. This course is an introduction to instructional computing and educational computing literature. It provides our candidates with hands-on experience with educational software utility packages and commonly used microcomputer hardware. In addition to this course, education students may elect to enhance their computer ability through the Computer Endorsement Program . This all-grades endorsement prepares classroom teachers with a variety of computing skills that enable them to incorporate computers into their own curriculum and instruction. Finally, candidates are required to demonstrate proficiency in the use of instructional technology in their courses and are assessed in a variety of ways during their program (see Program INTASC matrices). The School of Education further asserts its commitment to technology integration as one of the five goals in its Long Range Plan. According to this document the School seeks to "Provide Leadership in the Appropriate Use of Technologies to Enhance Teaching and Learning Experiences.” As the faculty deliberated upon the goals for the School at its Fall, 2001 faculty retreat, it chose to include the phrase "the appropriate use of technologies” as a means of ensuring that, in our pursuit of greater technical efficiency, we continue to engage in Critical Reflection concerning the best ways to use the tools available to us. IUB has long been a leader in higher education in the development and integration
of technology into the overall academic culture. School of Education faculty
are encouraged to model and integrate different technologies into their instructional
strategies and are supported in doing so by the Office
of Instructional Consulting which is available to faculty to provide assistance
in course development, instructional strategies design, technology integration,
instructional evaluation and research, media utilization, materials preparation,
and digital video editing and production. The School’s Education
Technology Service (ETS) provides on site support and services to faculty
for all aspects of classroom instruction using technology. Additional support
is also provided through University
Information Technology Services (UITS). The School also houses the Center
for Research on Learning and Technology (CRLT). The CRLT works closely with
the School and is dedicated to helping educators find the appropriate application
of technology to improve teaching and learning in diverse settings. Through
these various mechanisms our commitment to technology and its role in teaching
