The Secondary Education Programs lead to a Bachelor of Science: Secondary Education degree in specific content fields. The content fields include: exceptional needs, foreign languages, journalism, language arts/English, mathematics, science, and social studies. The School of Education, in cooperation with the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and the College of Arts and Sciences also offer secondary content fields in Health and Theatre respectively.

Successful completion of a secondary education program requires meeting both academic content and performance based standards as assessed at different points by the School of Education and by state designated tests. The secondary education teacher license in Indiana mandates a content field; a target population developmental level of early and late adolescence and young adulthood; and in the school setting multiple assignments at the middle school/junior high or high school grades 6-12.

Program Requirements (Anchor and CoT)

The Bloomington campus offers two secondary programs: The Anchor Secondary Education Program and A Community of Teachers.

Anchor:

The Anchor secondary education program prepares teacher candidates with interests in specific content fields (foreign languages, health, journalism, language arts/English, mathematics, science, social studies, and theatre) to teach early and late adolescents and young adults in the middle school, junior high school and high school settings, grades 6-12. The four year program promotes a combination of content knowledge, pedagogical strategies and professional dispositions toward learners and learning in a democratic society. The program features a mix of academic course work, a variety of field experiences in schools and opportunities to demonstrate responsible professional behavior. Graduates of the program are expected to be liberally educated and prepared to exercise professional judgment in service to the student, the community and the nation.

A Community of Teachers:

The Community of Teachers program prepares teacher candidates to teach students in the 6-12 middle school-high school settings in the secondary content fields. This program offers a cohort approach to teacher preparation. Applicants are selected for the program based on past academic performance and their ability to articulate personal and professional goals during the interview process. The interview process includes both faculty and student participation. The CoT program shares the general education and content field requirements with the Anchor program, but students must document thirty professional skills as a substitute for a significant part of the professional education requirements. This program provides an alternative for the more independent learner.
