Usability Testing of the Computer Prototypes

Several versions of new designs for the IUB Home Page were evaluated through usability tests in the summer of 1995. They are referred to as Version X, Version Y, Version Z, and the Pre-production Version.

Directions to testers

For each person who participates, be sure to try one version with 3 different browsers: Lynx, Mosaic and Netscape. Try to test one of the versions with a single user. It is unreasonable to try all versions with all questions, since it can take over an hour just to try to answer the questions below with any version.

The following questions are typical of those asked of information providers at IUB -- some more than 1,000 times per week (assuming you substitute other names/dates/departments for those specifically mentioned below).

Try to answer the following questions (do the first 5 with one browser, the second 5 with another browser, and the last 5 with the remaining browser):

  1. How much does it cost to live in the Halls of Residence (dorms)?
  2. What are the the requirements for a master's degree in instructional technology?
  3. What is Robert M. Knight's telephone number?
  4. When are the next IU men's and women's soccer games?
  5. How do I make an appointment to see my advisor? (as a student in the University Division)
  6. Does the IU Bloomington library have a copy of Maria Montessori's book, Spontaneous Activity in Education? What is the call number?
  7. How do I obtain a pass to use the new sports facility near Jordan Ave. and 10th St.?
  8. Where do I get my permit to register (for classes at IUB)?
  9. How long is the Doctor of Optometry Program (how many years to complete)?
  10. How late do campus buses run? Where's the nearest bus stop?
  11. How do I use electronic mail (e-mail)?
  12. What is President Brand's e-mail address?
  13. What musical events are occurring this week (opera, free concerts, jazz, etc.)?
  14. What do I need to graduate with a degree in computer science?
  15. Where is the Bursar's Office? I need to pay to replace my lost student ID card.
