Frequently Asked Admission Questions

When both campuses are accepting applications do I risk a spot at IUPUI by listing Bloomington as my first choice?
No. All applicants from Bloomington and IUPUI go into the same pool of applicants. These applicants are then ranked in accordance with their admission criteria, highest to lowest. When we get to your name on the list of applicants, we immediately look at your first campus preference. If space is available, that is where you will be offered admission. If space is not available, we will immediately look at your second choice. If there is a space available at your second campus preference, you will be offered admission there.

Is it harder to get into Bloomington than it is IUPUI?
Although Bloomington has fewer spaces than IUPUI, the difficulty of gaining admission to either campus depends entirely on the number of applicants, the quality of applicants, and how the applicants rank their campus preferences.

Will I need to take an entrance exam?
No.

How many students are admitted to Bloomington?
The Bloomington campus admits approximately 60 students each Fall.

What can I do if I'm not admitted?
There are four basic options. You can apply again during a future admission cycle. You can continue to take the General Education requirements, possibly taking some courses over in an effort to improve your GPA. You could change your major. Or you could transfer to another School of Nursing outside of the IU system. It is recommended that you consult with a nursing advisor to more clearly understand each of these options.

How many times may I apply for admission?
There is no limit on the number of times you can apply for admission to the School of Nursing but there is a limit on the number of offers of admission you can turn down. For example, if you are offered admission to the BSN major on any campus of IU for fall 2010, it will be the only offer of admission you will receive in this admission cycle. Should you decline this offer of admission, you will not be considered for fall 2010 admission on any other IU campus. Students who refuse an offer of admission two times are ineligible for future BSN admission consideration on any IU campus.

Does the School of Nursing maintain a "Waiting List" if I am not admitted?
No. If you are not admitted in a given semester you must re-apply for admission in a subsequent semester. You will receive no special priority nor consideration during future application cycles.

What GPA will I need in order to gain admission?
This is always difficult to predict. The minimum nursing or admission GPA required is a 2.70 and the minimum cumulative GPA is 2.7, but you should strive for the highest GPA possible.

Do I need to apply for admission at IUPUI or the other regional campuses (the campuses themselves, not the School of Nursing) since I have also listed them as a preference on the application?
No. If you are admitted to a different campus for the BSN major, your transfer to that campus will be processed internally via intercampus transfer.

Will my financial aid and/or scholarships transfer to another campus if I am admitted there?
Not necessarily. If you are seeking admission at a campus different from the one you are currently attending please consult the Student Office of Financial Assistance immediately for advice on how to proceed.

I currently do not meet the eligibility requirements. Can I still apply for admission?
You may apply if you will meet the eligibility requirements by the end of the semester in which you are applying.

I received less than a "C" in a student selected course. Should I retake the same course?
The School of Nursing will allow applicants to repeat up to three courses (but no more than two required sciences courses) of the general education courses required for the degree (Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Finite Math, English Composition, Introductory Psychology and Introductory Sociology). In cases where a course is repeated both attempts must be listed on the application but only the grade from the most recent attempt is figured into the application GPA. For example, if a student receives a "D" in Anatomy A215 and retakes the course earning a "B", only the "B" would be figured into the application GPA. Please note that it is always the most recent grade attempt that is figured into the application GPA (even if the grade was better on the first attempt.)

If I am eligible for admission to one IU nursing program, am I eligible to all of them?
Not necessarily. Students who apply through the Bloomington campus and are considered eligible for admission to Bloomington will also be considered eligible for admission to Indianapolis. Admission requirements on other IU campuses vary slightly between campuses and you may not necessarily meet those requirements. If you are interested in attending or meeting the eligibility requirements on more than the Bloomington or Indianapolis campuses, you should contact the nursing advisor on the regional campus for more information.

What science course is required for admission?
Anatomy is the required science at Bloomington. Students who have been unable to take anatomy due to its limited availability, and who have documentation of being on the ANAT waitlist, may substitute physiology (PHSL P215) or microbiology (BIOL M200/M215).
