Nursing Course Descriptions | General Education Cluster Course Distribution

 

The five clusters for the general education requirements of the IU School of Nursing curriculum are listed in the link below. Within each cluster is a list of IU Bloomington courses which can be used to meet the specific cluster requirement. Students admitted to IU fall 2005 and beyond are limited to the following course distributions.

Critical/Analytical/Science Cluster

Required for degree: ANAT A215, PHSL P215, BIOL M200/M215, + 6 hours of course work.
Required for admission: ANAT A215 + Finite Math + 3 additional hours from this cluster must be listed on the BSN application.

Courses in this cluster are specifically identified to assist the student in understanding and using a purposeful thought process to accurately interpret nursing problems, evaluate information in determining probable validity and reliability and relevance to problems at hand, make inferences that avoid faulty reasoning and promote decision making, explain and define reasoning supporting decisions/conclusions, and monitor thought processes of self and others for correcting decision processes.

 

Communication Cluster

Required for degree: English Composition, + course work to total 6 hours.
Required for admission: English Composition.

Courses in this cluster are important to the development of an accurate understanding of the written and spoken word. This cluster of courses also emphasizes the use of technology in managing, transferring, and enhancing the use and sharing of information. Please note that American Sign Language and all 100-200 level foreign language classes will count in this cluster.

Cultural Diversity Cluster

Required for degree: 6 hours of course work.
Required for admission: None

Students are expected to develop an understanding of and an appreciation for the diversity within and among cultures, how these differences shape values and beliefs, and how these beliefs effect behaviors of individuals, families, and societies.

Social Competence Cluster

Required for degree: PSY P101 OR P102 (or P151/P152), SOC S100 OR SOC S101 + 3 hours of course work.
Required for admission: PSY P101 OR P102 (or P151/P152) + SOC S100 or SOC S101.

General education courses in combination with nursing course work will provide the student with competencies consistent with the ability to manage human, fiscal and material resources, develop an understanding of the political and legal process governing the laws and policies shaping health and well-being, and build an appreciation for existing community resources and the defining of additional resources.

Humanistic Appreciation Cluster

Required for degree: 3 hours of course work.
Required for admission: none.


This cluster is important in developing an understanding of human nature and helps students develop a strong sense of aesthetics.
