Greetings! Another academic year is coming to a close and with it the graduation of our tenth class from IUB. We look forward to welcoming our new group of soon to be alumni. I hope you enjoy reading about all of the accomplishments of the faculty, staff and students during the academic year.

In the near future you will receive a letter from former class officers describing a scholarship fund they are establishing to help future students. They have envisioned a very innovative way for you to be a part of this endeavor…and pay it forward!

We have two very special upcoming events. First, we will hold our annual Alumni reception for graduates who live and work in the Bloomington area at the DeVault Alumni Center on April 17th from 5:30-7 pm.  On June 20-21st we will celebrate the 100th anniversary in Indianapolis. There is additional information in the newsletter about registering for both of these events. I look forward to seeing you there!

IU School of Nursing Helps Repay Disadvantaged Vets for Their Service

by Sarah Hamilton – December 16, 2013

October 17th was a day for Indiana to give back to local military veterans in need for all of their selfless service to our country.  On that day, the third annual South Central Indiana Stand Down for Veterans was held at the American Legion Post 18 in Bloomington, Indiana.  The Stand Down was a four-hour event, during which local homeless, disadvantaged, and unemployed veterans were provided free goods and services such as food, clothing, health screenings, housing and career counseling, VA benefit information, substance abuse treatment, and assistance in obtaining an Indiana ID.  Veterans in attendance also received a hot lunch provided by the American Legion.

Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSON) was one of more than 30 local organizations, including medical centers, veteran support groups, local missions, law offices, and administrative offices, to participate in the Stand Down.  Although this was IUSON’s first time participating in this event, the School was very active in its planning and implementation.

Sim Lab Brings Realistic Clinical Experience to IU Bloomington Students

by Sarah Hamilton – December 17, 2013

When nursing students walk into patients’ rooms for the first time to test their new knowledge, they may suffer anxiety or feel as if they’ve suddenly forgotten everything they’ve learned in class.  This can be a daunting experience for them.   In order to help ease nursing and medical students into clinical practice, Indiana University Bloomington constructed a simulation lab.  The lab was jointly funded by the Nursing and Medical Sciences Departments, along with some funding from the Provost.

In the summer of 2012, a large classroom in the Classroom Office Building was reconstructed to create two simulation rooms – an intensive care unit (ICU) and a labor and delivery room – as well as a control room, and two debriefing rooms.  The ICU room is equipped with a Hill-Rom bed, Alaris IV pump, oxygen regulator, suction, and an adult 3G manikin, which is Laerdal’s highest-fidelity manikin – it blinks, sweats, and its pupils dilate.  The labor and delivery room contains a Hill-Rom delivery bed, a warmer, a “sim mom” manikin that can give birth, a newborn manikin, and a “vital kid” child manikin.  These manikins, exhibit pulses, heart, lung, and bowel sounds, and are CPR-ready.
