BCUR Travel Award

Announcement:

The Hutton Honors College and the Office of Competitive Awards and Research are sponsoring two students for an all-expense paid trip to the British Conference on Undergraduate Research (BCUR) in Bournemouth, UK from April 25-27, 2017. BCUR promotes undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity in all fields of study by holding this international annual conference for undergraduate students. The approximate value of each award including registration, lodging, poster printing, travel and food is $2200.

The purpose of this award is to provide Indiana University students the opportunity to learn about the post-graduate research environment and opportunities in the United Kingdom. The expectation is that the award recipients will participate in one or more of several nationally-competitive awards program for post-graduate study in the United Kingdom or Ireland during the fall semester of their senior year. Those programs include the Churchill, Fulbright, Gates-Cambridge, Marshall, Mitchell and Rhodes.

Eligibility criteria:

-          Current enrolled status as a junior with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.

-          Will graduate in December 2017; May 2018 or August 2018.

Application requirements:

-         Write a statement in three parts (maximum 750 words for each part) that addresses the following:

  • Identify a post-graduate study program in the UK or Ireland of interest to you. You can include specific faculty or researchers with whom you would like to work. Also provide why you have chosen the particular institution.
  • Your professional aspirations: Indicate in which discipline(s)/field(s) you are considering making your career, including specific positions/roles you aspire to. Specify how your academic program and graduate educational plans in the UK or Ireland will assist you in achieving your goals.
  • Briefly describe an example of leadership experience. Include details on your role with the activity and the impact of your involvement.

-         Permission to acquire a copy of your unofficial transcript and the name of a faculty member who could serve as a reference. (Note: the reference does not need to provide a letter but must be a tenure or tenure track faculty member.) 

-          Provide a current CV or resume – maximum 2 pages. 

Send the statement and CV or resume attached to an email to iucare@indiana.edu. In the text of the provide permission to access your unofficial transcript and the name of the reference. 

Timeline of competition and trip:

  • Monday March 13, 2017 (11:59pm) – Deadline to submit application statement and permission to acquire unofficial transcript.
  • Semi-finalists may be contacted to take part in a 10-15 minute Skype interview.
  • Final notifications will be issued before March 24, 2017.
  • April 24 – 28, 2017 – travel to Bournemouth, England and attend the BCUR conference.
