Course Objectives

The major focus of the course is to make connections between topics of higher mathematics to secondary school curriculum and methods.

1.      To make connections between topics of higher algebra to secondary school curriculum and methods.

2.      To produce a useful CD/website illustrating these connections.

3.      To broaden our perspectives of secondary mathematics.

Attendance

I will expect you to attend each class. If you must miss class for a school function or religious celebration, let me know at least two weeks in advance. See comments on attendance in the Assignments and Grading sections.

Assignments

All assignments will be related to the production of the CD mentioned above. Each student is expected to attend class every week and contribute an additional 15 hours of work toward the CD outside of class. Your load will increase by 5 hours for every class that you miss. Contributions may include:

  • Summaries of ideas from popular mathematics books like Beyond Numeracy.
  • Critiques of articles from journals like The Mathematics Teacher or The College Journal of Mathematics
  • Mathematical computer programs
  • Graphs, tables, etc. produced in applications like Excel or GSP
  • Journal reflections on topics discussed in class
  • Electronically reproduced solutions to problems introduced in class.
  • New and interesting problems that you have created

Arrange your plans for contributions with me by email ahead of time so that we can determine the number of hours your piece will require. I may ask you to revise or rewrite pieces that need more work or contain mistakes (typographical, grammatical or mathematical). Try to spread the work evenly over the semester. Your first draft for any piece must be turned in by December 1st. Only revisions will be accepted after that date.

Grading

This is a Pass/Fail course. You will pass if you miss no more than three classes, complete the appropriate number of hours in work outside of class, and complete all required revisions by the end of the semester.
