Things to Bring
Everything you might need for traveling oversea. Most international airline can let you check 2-3 luggages with no more than 70lbs per each for F-1 visa. You can also carry small bags with you. Remember to bring every document you need to get in U.S. especially passport, visa, certificate and I-20 for international students.
Clothes:
The weather in Indiana is very likely as the weather in North of China, such as Beijing. It can be very cold in the winter, about -10 to1°C (10-30°F) in December-January, lowest temperature can be -20°C; and can be very hot in the summer, average about 24-32°C (75-90°F) in June-August, highest can be over 100°F. Normally, the snow will fall down during late December and will discontinuously fall until February. So, you should bring some warm outwear and coat, a couple sweaters is enough, because there are heater in every room, usually very cold outdoor, but warm indoor. For other clothing, you can just bring normal needs that enough for one-two week(s) daily change: jeans, pants, t-shirt, skirt, jacket, shoes, etc. Also maybe one formal suit or dress for interview or special occasion.
School Supply:
You can buy some textbooks in China if you can find the EXACT same as required by your professor. You can find the textbook required information and compare the price at www.iubookstore.com under the “Purchase textbook” tablet. Not suggest you bring any piratical American movie DVDs, but Chinese and other countries’ are fine. You might be caught and fine very hard when go through the security check when you enter the U.S.
Medicine/Health:
Basically bring the medicine you think you will/might need, such as for cold, fever, stomach sick, allergy, pain relief. It is expensive to see doctor in U.S., and all international students at IU are required to have health insurance for themselves and families. You will automatically enroll into the health insurance plan by IU, but it does not cover dental and vision. So, we suggest you go see dentist and optometrist before you come to U.S. Fix your teeth; get 2 new pairs of eye glasses or contact lenses if needed. House Wares:
You can bring a few cooking wares (if you plan to live in apartment), chopsticks, and bowls, etc. Most of the school residences and apartments provide refrigerator, kitchen range, oven, and washer & dryer; off-campus apartments might have more stuff such as microwave and dish washer. The voltage in here is 110V, different than in China, so need to figure out if it works for your electrics.
Computer:
If you plan to buy a new laptop, we suggest to buy it in here, more convenience and comparatively cheaper. However, there are computer room in school libraries and almost every on-campus building and residence hall.
Cash:
Bring at least about $1000 cash; get some quarters for make a phone call and washing machine. Other than cash, you may want to go to the Bank of China in your city and ask about currency exchange and your money transfer when you arrived in Bloomington.

Getting Here
Arriving
No matter where you are flying from, your flight will eventually land at Indianapolis International Airport. After that you will have to use ground transportation to get to IUB campus. The airport is about an hour's drive from the campus. The most common type of transportation for this trip is Star of America. Airport pick-up service will also be available to those who are not able to catch a shuttle. IUCSSA will try her best to make your trip easier and help you settle down after your arrival.

Getting Around
总的来说，Bloomington的交通还是很方便的，不仅各地较集中，而且也没有大城市的各种交通烦扰。如果想寻找校内的地址，请察看IUB校园地图网络版 或 PDF打印版 (地图也可在宿舍/公寓的Center Desk, Main Library, 和Orientation时获得）。如果想查看校外的地址以及到达的路线，最好的办法是使用像 Google Map 或 Mapquest 一类的网络地图。以下我们简单的介绍一下Bloomington的交通：
步行 – 校园内的各地都可以步行到达。但要注意的是IUB是全美最大的校园之一，所以我们建议新生带上地图。
自行车 - 在大型便利商店（比如Target或 Wal-Mart）可购得较便宜的新自行车，而旧车则可以在Onestart 里的Furniture Sale或者其他 Yard Sale/MovingSale中买到二手自行车(请务必注意二手自行车的使用年限和质量)，要注意的是：
1. 在IU停放自行车不是免费的，需要缴一个5元的一次性注册费。详情请浏览 IU Parking Operation 的Student Bicycle Permits.
2.Bloomington有很多斜坡，并且非主干道没有自行车车道，不可避免的需要和行人或者机动车共用道路，请注意安全。
3. 冬天骑车很冷，并且路面会打滑，请一定注意安全。
公车 - Bloomington的公交车有Campus Bus 和 City Bus 两种。前者车身上是红色条纹，后者是绿色。Campus Bus 是对任何人完全免费。city Bus只对IU学生和老师免费。所以乘坐City Bus 时需要出示Student ID 或者支付75 美分的车费，司机不提供找零。强烈建议乘坐公车之前先查询 Bus Schedule并且带上Student ID (Bus schedule可以在Monroe Public Library, Dorm/Apartment Offices, Orientation或者在公车上免费获得)。需要注意的是，公车有时会 不准时。学生上课时，公车比较准时，往返也比较频繁，一般10至20分钟一趟。但晚上或者周末则可能等上30分钟到1个小时。而且站牌很迷你，在路边不太起眼的位置。另外，有时同一个站台等到的车会有两个不同的方向，请注意观察公交车车顶显示的活动字幕或者直接询问司机。

汽车 - 在上路之前，司机需要获得美国驾照，和停车许可证，详细情形，请参考Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles 和 RPS Parking
出租车 - 在路上跑的出租车都是已经有顾主预定的，需要出租车，请拨打(812)339-9744 Yellow Cab Company 预定。车费随着人数和距离增加，到达终点站时，司机会用对讲机和总部联系，这时请注意双方谈话内容，因为总部会报出一个数字作为顾客的车费。结账时，也请记得要付给司机至少15%的小费。

As a rule, good calling cards cost more. The cheapest is usually the poorest in quality just like the way you go shopping. Occasionally you get a good card but that is because you are lucky. There is no guarantee that that kind of card will last long. Using calling card is like you drive at downtown, you are stopped constantly. But if you could manage to avoid rush hour, you can go as well as you are on a free way. Calling card can be frustrating because when you promise to call someone at certain time but it happens that was a "rush hour", you will never make it. Don't expect a calling card to do the job of AT&T or MCI phone lines. That's why it is cheaper. A tip I can give you is to use your calling card in the morning before 10am. Weekends and nights are the bad time to use calling card. My judgment on good calling card is you don't lose money on it though sometimes you are frustrated in the process of using them. You get what you have paid for. The calling card I am selling is comparatively good in terms of price and quality. They are cheap and sometimes they run into "red-light", but they never lose a minute by no reason. That is you don't lose money on it. There is a customer service which is available to every of my customer. When you have problem you can either come to me or the company to have it settled. What's more, you use the card first before you pay me. There is no business man work the way I do.

总的来说，在Bloomington购物是较方便的，不像在美国很多大城市购物需要开车很久，还有交通的烦恼。Bloomington内各种商店较集中，最远也就驱车15分钟。Bloomington市内最大的购物区在College Mall 一带，离学校很近，基本上什么都买得到。并且C Bus 和 E Bus 等公交线都通过该区。下面提到的商店你都可以通过 Google Map 或 MapQuest 轻松查到。
食品:
新鲜的蔬菜，水果，肉类，还有食品杂货都可以在像Kroger和 Marsh这样的大型grocery stores买到,但往往较贵。至于东方食品类则可以在 Saraga，Obo’s， 10th St. Market,以及新开张的 Great Wall Asian Store这样的东方超市买到。同样的物品，有时在东方超市买会比较便宜。但东方超市与Kroger或Marsh相比规模都较小。如果你是IUCSSA Special Member 的话，在Obo’s购物超过20元可以享受10%的优惠。
Kroger, Saraga , 和 Obo’s都在College Mall附近。Wal-Mart和SAM’s Club也可以买到食品且经济实惠。但它们离学校很远，往往需要开车才能去。特别是SAM’sClub是像批发一样,一般去那里买时都一次买很多，没有车根本载不了。还要注意在SAM’s Club 买东西是需要办它们的卡并且缴年费的。

日用品:
日常用品往往在Target, CVS,和Wal-Mart购买。Target和CVS都在College Mall 附近。简单的日用品如洗漱用品和常用药品等在Kroger和Marsh也有卖，所以买菜时就可以顺便买了。另外在学校内的C-store和Village Pantry也可以买到简单的日用品。

Downtown Bloomington
• Unique and specialty shops on Kirkwood Avenue and go along surround the Courthouse where you can find some trendy fashions, special gifts, artisan jewelry, and variety of things. The Fountain Square Mall includes some boutiques and specialty stores; it is on the south side of the courthouse.
家具:
买新的家具的话，Target 和Wal-Mart很便宜，但他们没有床卖。Beds Today（321 S. Walnut St）有挺多价钱不错的各种家具包括床，会送货上门，而且学生有20%的discount。Website是 http://bedstoday.net。 1st Mattress 在College Mall 附近，有几款很便宜的床 （200到300块左右），也会送货美国的新床很贵，所以很多人选择买旧家具。要买旧家具的话，最好的两个去处是China-list和Onestart里的Self-service. 这两个地方都常有人发moving sales的信息。另外，你居住地方有时也会有人张贴广告卖东西。不过需要注意的是买旧家具前要先想好怎么搬回你的住处。
电子产品:
Bloomington最大的电子产品商店时 Best buy。 不过注意Bestbuy店内销售的产品比它网站上的少。 对于电子产品，大部分人选择网上购物，因为这样选择多很多，也可以货比三家。需要注意的是，美国象USB电缆，摄像头这样的一些小东西比国内贵很多，所以建议大家从国内带。
服饰及其他:
College Mall内有各种商店，大家可以自己探索。Mall 内的Old Navy和Sears 有很便宜的衣服。专卖年轻女装的Wet Seal的衣服很时尚价钱也不错。另外如果有车的话，可以驾车一个小时到 Edinburgh Premium Outlets 买到便宜的各种名牌。
买衣服需要注意的是美国的号码都很大，所以买前最好试穿。另外烘干机会让一些衣服缩水。
每年感恩节和圣诞节是美国的购物周，服饰一律大减价。所以很多人都等到那个时候买衣服 .

IU Credit Union
到学校后很重要的一件事便是到银行开户。这不仅是让你在美国的生活方便，学生也常常要靠自己在美国的账户缴学费。一般开户会同时开Checking Account (活期账户) 和Saving Account（定期账户）。虽然你会被要求开定期帐户，但大部分人并不会用它。活期帐户是最重要的，它不仅让你有带币卡(Debit Card)可以用，在缴学费时也可作为你的转帐中心。注意国内的带币卡是不能用来缴学费的。原因是国内的卡号比美国的长，所以在包括Onestart在内的很多网站上都用不了。 IU Credit Union 在Bloomington，有各种各样的银行和信贷协会。 从学生的立场来说，IU信贷协会 (IU Credit Union， 简称IUCU) 是其中最为普遍的一个。IU Credit Union提供了低费，优秀服务和某些最佳费率. ．IU Credit Union在大学之内还有一个方便的支行. 它就设于Indiana Memorial Union. 相较与其它的银行或财政机关，唯一只有IU信贷协会有个branch在大学之内．如果您没有车的话，您可以方便得处理您的所需而不必到校外去． 另外IU Credit Union还给予您一张银行卡 (debit card)， 国内通常叫代币卡．你可以在任何时间提取现金．不过你必须在IU Credit Union专用提款机内提取，否则IU Credit Union将从您的户头扣除一定的手续费（大概在一至二美元之间）． 如果您决定开一个帐户， IUCU会同时要求您开两个帐户： 支票帐户 (Checking Account)和储蓄存款 (Savings Account)．IUCU只要求你在那个储蓄帐户保留$5。 实际上，储蓄存款累积较好的利息。 此外，还有各项定期存款可供选择。如果你要开户的话， 直接到IU Credit Union 任何一个支行，都有专门的银行要员为您进行详细的解说和介绍。IUCU还设置了互联网银行服务．您可在网络上查寻帐户上的资金往来．

學生證:
怎樣領取你的學生證? （Campus Access Card）
Eigenman Hall (EG) – 在EG領取學生證較方便 ，因為很多時後 EG 都是給新生住的臨時住宿 (temporary housing)。你只需要前往 EG 的地下室以及準備你的十位數學生號碼 (10 digit student ID number)。
IU Memorial Hall (MM or IMU) – 座落於Ballantine Hall (BH) 附近，而很多新生說明會亦會在此舉行。領取學生證的地方位於IMU二樓的書店中，敬請準備你的十位數學生號碼 (10 digit student ID number)及整理儀容以備拍照
學生證/Campus Access Card 的用途:
Bloomington bus (綠色) – 你須要出示你的學生證，才可以乘坐公車(綠色)。至於乘坐紅色的校園公車，則不須要出示學生證。
Meal points – 你可在宿舍食堂、圖書館使用你的學生證裡的餐卷點數付賬。
洗衣 – 用學生證來支付洗衣費較投幣便宜 ($0.25 cheaper for washing and $0.50 cheaper for drying)。
餐廳 – 校園內很多餐廳都接受 Campus Access 來付款。
書店 – Campus Access 可在TIS 和 IMU bookstores 作付款之用。
複印 – 你可在圖書館複印，但須使用學生證內的Campus Access 來支付複印的費用。
注意事項:
學生證可用作Meal Points和Campus Access，這兩種用途:
Meal point:
當你簽宿舍合約時須同時選擇你所需的餐卷點數Meal point用量，建議選擇最少用量，因為大部份同學都不能於學期完結前把所有Meal point用完。

Textbook
课本和学习用品
在Bloomington，主要有两家书店出售课本：IU Bookstore和T.I.S. Bookstore.
IU bookstore有两家分店，分别位于Eigenmann Hall和IMU。T.I.S Bookstore位于3rd Street。两家书店的定价几乎没有区别。每个学期开学前1-2星期，老师把课程的必读书目和推荐书目告知学生，并告知这两家书店。书店会根据老师提供的书单进新书和二手书，后者会便宜很多（虽然在美国很多二手书都像新的一样）。书架上按字母顺序排列标明专业和课程号，你可以按图索骥地找到你所需要的课本。购买时一定要记得保留小票（receipt），在这两家书店里买的课本无论新书还是二手书在一定时间内都可以全款退货或者半款退货。如果遗憾的是，你所需要的课本在货架上只有很贵很贵的新书——或是有人比你捷足先登买走了二手书，或是该课本只有新书的货源——那么此时你只有两种选择：买或者不买。
还有其他的途径可供参考。
途径一：找师兄师姐借书。
途径二：借图书馆的书，通常研究生的借书期限是120天，本科生的借书期限是45天。如果IU的图书馆没有，可以通过WorldCat请求从美国其他大学图书馆递送（当然是免费的！），不过递送时间和借书期限可能根据各图书馆的规定而不同。
途径三：网上购买。推荐一个比较图书价格的网站：www.bigwords.com。输入ISBN号或者书目名称，可以获得包括亚马逊（amazon、ebay各大网站上的图书价格信息，通过该网站链接过去就可以直接订购了。网上购买的缺点在于：1.运送时间因卖家而异，如果急需的课本慢吞吞地隔了几个星期才到会影响课程的学习 2.大多数情况下卖家还是很讲信用的，但是付了钱书没拿到的情况也并非没有，找网站argue费时间费精力费心思 3. 一般情况下不接受退货。即使接受退货也得跑邮局，自己承担运费。不推荐的途径：借来书本复印。在国内校园，由于各种原因习惯了整本整本地复印课本，在美国行不通。一来这里复印费和纸张都比较贵，二来涉及版权问题，弄不好还惹上官司，三来可能被暗地嗤之以鼻。
这里的课程除了阅读课本外，还要求阅读很多学刊论文。这些论文可以在图书馆的数据库中查找到，可以在电脑上阅读，也可以打印出来。公共电脑室都有打印机。研究生一个学期有1000张（黑白）打印额度，本科生一个学期有650张打印额度，某学期没有用完的额度可以累计到下个学期。有些阅读量大的专业这个额度是不够用的，多出来的部分就要按张付费。尽管选择双面打印并不会把两张算成一张，但是可以节约资源、节省空间。
IUBookstore这两家书店里的学习用品应有尽有，打折的时候会便宜些。顺便提一句，填张表格加入T.I.S.书店的会员（免费的！）记得填上生日，生日快到的时候还有意外的惊喜哦！

Social Security Number (SSN)
背景介绍
SSN是Social Security Number的缩写，即“美国的社会保障号码”。SSN就是由社会保障署针对新生的美国人和有工作许可的外国人所发出的号码，用以让雇主处理僱用相关事项，以及雇员报税及其它与美国政府各部门和民间金融机构往来之用。SSN 在美国社会里非常重要。比如说：没有它你就没有信用记录，办不了信用卡，办手机时也要多交几百块的押金。
凭借SSN，既可以收取保障税，同时也可以享受社保的福利待遇。在美国，SSN是一个无法回避的号码，它的实际含义和用途要丰富得多。这个社保号把一个美国人一生几乎所有的信用记录串在一起，包括个人的银行账号、税号、信用卡号、社会医疗保障号等都与之挂钩。只要把某个人的社会保障号码输入全国联网的计算机，任何人均可查到自己的背景资料，既包括年龄、性别、出生日期等这些自然状况，也包括教育背景、工作经历，以及在税务、保险、银行的信用状况、有无犯罪记录等等。如果一个人有过不良纳税记录，那么这一记录将永远伴随着他，几乎无论他做什么，无论他到哪个州，这一污点都无法抹去，他将因此而四处碰壁。
因为SSN是如此的重要，所以每一个美国人也都十分珍护它自己的SSN，这也就是你在网上、黄页中可以随便找到一些姓名、住址、电话、甚至银行帐号、信用卡号等，但找不到SSN的原因。每一个SSN都是与一个拥有者捆绑在一起的，一生不变。美国历史上仅有极少的部分人因SSN被盗而更改。任何一个SSN都是唯一的，一经启用后便不会被再次启用。
SSN是一个不连续的9位数，格式是“999 99 9999”，其中包含的意义属于绝密，外人无法得知，使用上还与你的身份和密码相关联，全部都是在服务器端验证的，也不知道是什么算法，因而也无法伪造。
不要把SSN与税号混淆。Tax ID 则是由美国国税局(IRS)针对有需要在美国报税的外国人所发出的号码，只限于和IRS间的报税用途，其开宗明义就说明不能用于其它用途。虽然SSN 和 Tax ID都是一串9位数的号码，而且很多机构也不会事先调查，但是把Tax ID 挪作 SSN使用是不合法的，而且日后申请绿卡时有可能会出问题。
在有些注册登记中，如果要求SSN而你没有，要么你不填，要么你可以填入九个“0”来代替。在Bloomington的一些机构会同意你使用IU发给你的十位数的Student ID。请事先询问
II.办理流程
Step 1.根据雇佣单位出具的相关文件及证明，至Franklin Hall的International Student Office审核盖章。(印象有点模糊,望校对)
Step 2.前往Social Security Administration Office，填写Social Security Card申请表。
所需文件：I-20，护照，1所准备的文件，其他雇佣单位相关文件。

Directions： Bus：在Washington St. Station乘Bloomington Transit #2(#2好像是沿着Rogers Street开的，记不太清)，在Grimes/Patternson路口站下。路口右转步行100米左右，路对面即是。
Car：沿college Ave南行至Grimes右转，前行1/4 mile。
Step 3.拿好收据，title为social security administration important information，有office manager签字。

Airport Pick-Up
IUCSSA and the Bloomington Chinese Christian Church (BCCC) will work together to provide airport pick-up service for newcommers. However, due to lack of drivers, we strongly encourage all newcomers take Bloomington Shuttle Bus to get to IUB campus. The shuttle bus runs every two hours between 6:40AM and 10:40PM. Please send the above information to us at least 3 weeks before your departure. Failure for compliance may result in deprioritization of your pick-up request. We will reply you within a week after receiving your request. Arriving during weekends is preferable. If you arrive in a group larger than two, we will probably not be able to pick you up since we rarely have more than one driver available at the same time. Please also be aware that due to high gas price and other factors, a pick-up will cost each person $40.00 in cash. The money is used to reimburse drivers for gas and milage.
Please also be aware that you connected flight to Indianapolis might delay. If you have a delay or any other emergency that can affect your time of arrival, please notify us as soon as you can. So if you don't have a cellphone that can work in the US, we strongly encourag you to carry some quarters for pay phone or a phone card.
