Indiana University Debate

Welcome,

The 2011-2012 season is well underway. The resolution for this year pertains to the question of U.S. democracy assistance to Arab Spring states. The team began researching the topic in the cabins located in the Bradford Woods.Since September, we began our travel schedule at the University of Northern Iowa and will continue to compete until nationals in late March at the University of Oklahoma. For more information on our 2011-2012 adventures please follow our results and updates.

Background:

Our program returned to national competitive debate in 2009-2010. Evidence suggests that the pre-1994 era, spanning the long 190 year history of the University's existence, had Hoosiers boasting of great success in forensics and competitive debate. After a 17 year wait, a group of motivated students along with John Graham, the Dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, established a coalition of the willing to revive a healthy culture of debate. Support from the provost's office, the College of Arts and Science, Comm and Culture, and the Kelley School of Business has resulted in a strong and enduring movement towards making IU a cornerstone of the global debate community.

In order to fulfill this mission, IU debate wishes to grow the team with students who live for the thrills of debate. Our squad room is already filled with qualified and enthusiastic coaches and twelve highly motivated and dedicated debaters.

Do YOU wish to join Hoosier debate? Click on the recruitment tab on the left of your screen. If you are a former IU debater from our past, please take the time to click on the Alumni project. News and tournament results will be posted periodically throughout the season.

What does a year of debate experience produce?

The answer is unparalleled public speaking experience, indepth research, argumentation, and critical thinking skills. From start to finish, team members will have opportunities to deliver hundreds of speeches with expert judges and coaches. Furthermore, this linked video of debate coach reactions to the 2010-2011 immigration topic, is just a taste of the inevitable knowledge you can obtain after just one year of debate.
