Indiana University Debate
Welcome, The research preparatory wheels for the 2012-2013 policy debate season are already spinning. Next year's college policy topic will be on the controversy of increasing energy production from within the United States borders. The wording of the topic will be released in late July. It will contain a mixture of hydrocarbons and renewable options. IU debate is also excited to bring back the Hoosier Debate Camp to Bloomington this July. Over fifty students and ten faculty members will engage in heated deliberative battles over issues spanning governmental power, transportation infrastructure and more. What does a year of debate experience produce? The answer is unparalleled public speaking experience, in-depth research, argumentation, and critical thinking skills. From start to finish, team members will have opportunities to deliver hundreds of speeches with expert judges and coaches. Furthermore, this linked video of debate coach reactions to the 2010-2011 immigration topic, is just a taste of the inevitable knowledge you can obtain after only one year of debate. Background: Our program returned to national competitive debate scene in 2009. Evidence suggests that the pre-1994 era, spanning the long 190 year history of the University's existence, had Hoosiers boasting of great success in forensics and competitive debate. After a 17 year lull of debate, a group of motivated students along with John Graham, the Dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, helped to establish a coalition of the willing to revive a healthy culture of debate. With Support from SPEA, the Provost's office, the vice Provosts office, the College of Arts and Science, Communication and Culture, and the Kelley School of Business we are building a strong and enduring movement towards making IU a cornerstone of the global debate community. Do YOU wish to join Hoosier debate? Click on the recruitment tab on the left of your screen. If you are a former IU debater from our past, please take the time to click on the Alumni project. News and tournament results will be posted periodically throughout the season. Are you interested in donating to our program? Courtesy of ArbutusYearbook 2010-2011
